Speeding ticket in Italy - I wasn't even in the country!

Buongiorno!

I've just received a speeding ticket from the Italian police. The date of the offence is 25th March but I wasn't on the sunny banks of Lake Como, I was in not so sunny Leicester!

I was in Italy in a rental car the previous month but I came home on February 28th. Can anyone please suggest what I should do next? Is it down to me to prove that I wasn't in Italy on 25th March?

    Yes ignore it! But avoid Italy for a while! :)

    You won't find yourself seeking shelter in the Venezuelan embassy although Hugo Chavez will certainly grant you citizenship! :)

    I'm no expert, but I would start by contacting the rental company, and asking them why they have given the Italian police the wrong driver's information for the date in question. Get them to admit their error for a start, and then use that with the Italian authorities (or insist the rental company sort it out).

    No, it's up to them to prove it, not you. But unless you are going back to Italy soon, I would just bin it - they can't do anything cross border.

    Thankyou everyone, I'll contact the rental company now. I have got a booking with them for my trip to Como at christmas, maybe I'll reserve a place with the Foreign Legion first, just in case ;)

    Also, check if they've slapped an admin charge on your credit card. If so you'll want it back.

    There was a random charge for 30 ish euro - cheeky so and so's!

    You might be able to get that back via a charge back from your CC supplier. Their 'service' as supplied (i.e. the admin) was not fit for purpose.

    dispute the charge with CC company. They will deny payment till they prove it is genuine.

    That should help sort things out.

    I'm guessing the real culprit was a friend or employee of the company. So easier to blame someone abroad who cannot easily fight it
    One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.
