Buying new glasses and prescription sunglasses

OK second time lucky (the site crashed when I submitted the first time)

I'm after some glasses & prescription sunglasses. After finding out that vision express and their "2 for £99" only applies to about 20 frames in the whole selection, I'm looking elsewhere so I can price-match them against their overinflated prices.

I've looked at spex4less and martin's article but there are so many retailers and different levels of service, I'd prefer to go on recommendation. I don't have issues ordering online except of course that I'm comfortable wearing them as I won't get to try them on beforehand.

Ideally I'd like to pricematch against vision express as we have a 10% discount with the insurance protection (grand advantage card) from them.

Thanks peeps

I go to a local optician Punch and although they never seem to have any offers on, if you ask them they seem to be flexible. I think they're keen to please and keep you as a customer. They gave me a good price for prescription sunglasses. I also found a site on the net that were offering the slimmed down lenses for free, can't remember the site though, sorry! I'm really short sighted so if my lenses aren't slimmed, they are like milk bottles!

I work for Specsavers, we normally do an offer in the summer of 241 with 2nd pair as prescription sunnies at no extra cost, usually applies to all frames between £75 & £125 and prices include standard prescription lenses in the first pair too (some places charge extra for lenses).

At the min we just have a basic 241 running so you would have to pay extra to get the 2nd pair tinted but i'll try to find out when the 241 with sunnies is starting :D

I've just last week taken delivery of my first pair of "internet glasses" from https://www.directspecs.co.uk and they're absolutely fine. Rimless, with thin and light lenses, anti-scratch coating and anti-reflection coating for £47.50 inc. delivery which took about 2 days. I'm pleased enough and will be ordering a spare pair from them in the next month or two.

And it looks like we made it once again

Thanks for the replies peeps  Special thanks to wiggly, going on a secret mission to discover when the offer's coming back. All for special Crabster :D

I was going to go to specsavers tomorrow but probably give it a miss and check out online retailers so I'm armed with info about different prices etc. do specsavers pricematch at all? :D
  • you'll be lucky if you get specsavers to price-match :D

high street opticians can never compete with on-line retailers cos they have to pay the likes of me, and I don't come cheap Crabby ;):p

Don't come cheap?? I bet poor FB feels the weight of that the most :rotfl:

I thought about getting a quote from specsavers then taking it to vision express who would match it. I'd also get 10% off as I've got their grand advantage card from a few years back. Is that being a good moneysaver or a cheeky crab? :o

P.S: Vision express definitely match online prices as long as it's dead identical, which is tricky i.e. finding exact same frame. :o
  • thanks for the heads up about that one wiggy, they're always trying to get me to buy a new pair of specs when i go shopping as its right next door! They've only got a standard 241 at the mo too. They've also got students get 30% off too, can that be used in conjuction with 241?
Finally, i remeber last year boots had vouchers for half price specs. sunnies or normal. Does anyone know when/if they'll be doing it again this year?
