O/S Daily thread Friday 26th October 2012

Hi, this is the Daily Thread for 26th October. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.

When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” type start does just as well.

A ridiculously early good morning to everyone. I'm up very early but will probably go back to bed at some point as I'm not working till this afternoon. Managed to see off DH's spreading lurgy in a matter of hours; I'm pretty resilient with colds etc.

Had a chilled day of sorting out finances and paperwork. Cancelled 3 unnecessary things which will save me £107/month. My gym contract has let me break out early because of my recent neck surgery. I'll miss the place but I can't use any of the facilities any more. Placed an Asda online order for Saturday to stock up the pantry a bit, but was very frugal - I don't mind their Smartprice stuff and can always jazz it up into something more spectacular. One of my obssessions is never running out of condiments like apple sauce and mint jelly as we tend to eat quite plainly and oldfashioned. I've temporarily lost the appetite for spicy food, and am in meat & veg mode while aiming to reduce wheat. Dinner last night was lamb steaks & egg fried rice. Have lost a stone in the past 2 months.

Looked up who Diva was after seeing the messages yesterday and ended up in tears. So sad - she sounded lovely.

Off to Costco tonight for industrial quantities of catfood - at least 240 tins plus an extra tray for a friend. Still have to sort through the freezers to work out how much meat I can store; definitely have more space in there than a month ago, but it seems we don't get through as much meat as I thought we did, so that will also save a bit from the budget longterm. I'm aiming to increase our veg intake away from potatoes but it's hard because DH doesn't like 1/4 of the stuff I like. I guess I can always just do extra things like putting a couple of parsnips in the oven with the meat, or hiding stuff in the crockpot or lasagnas. Having a run on roast Mediterranean veg (onions/peppers/sweet potatoes) at the moment; so easy to prep.

All in all, feeling pretty good + hoping HR will let me go back to 4 halfdays next week after an enforced rest this week. Going to see if a friend will put in a new fence post and panels for me as DH refuses to do it; I'd rather pay him than an anonymous workman.

Hope everyone has a good day :)

Tiglath, we often have carrot & parsnip mash instead of mashed potato, and we have roasted veg with peppers, courgettes & onions.

Good Morning everyone quite a chilly morning this morning.DGS Ben starts his iceland job this afternoon so its going to be a bit of a scramble as he picks up his brothers from school at 3.30. and takes them home on a Friday afternoon after he has finished school and I get there to their house at around 4.10 after History club. But what I'll do is give him a lift down to the shop to save his walking as he starts at 4.30 only for today then its Monday,Wednesday and Saturdays at 6-9 or 10.He is quite happy with that as it will get him some cash for his Reading Festival next year.he is still keeping on his paper round in the mornings, but thats only on alternate weeks anyway.A real little grafter is our Ben.
My eldest DD is off to NYC this morning with her OH for a week. They do like to go in the autumn every year if they can as she loves to shop and get her Christmas bits and bobs there. Both her and her OH work long stressful hours so this is their treat for all their hard grafting during the year.
Right I must get a wriggle on and have some breakfast, probably porrige to warm me up a bit. Boys break up today for half term so I will have a week of not rushing around in the morning first thing next week.
have a good day everyone and keep warm

Morning all, up earlier than usual for me as I'm still coughing and spluttering quite a bit.
I did manage to tidy the lounge and my bedroom yesterday, so today will dust and vacuum them and clean windows etc. Feels much better being able to survey a space that's clear and organised.
Today i'll be working from home on something I enjoy so hopefully the relative quiet will help this cold improve.
Saw my son yesterday and he didn't want anything to do with me! I think it's his way of showing displeasure and me going away. I did manage a smile and a chuckle from him and I'm hoping he'll have forgiven me by our swimming session tomorrow. The local baths do a 1h cheap session for disabled people on a Saturday lunch time. it's quite a social occasion for all of us and as my son lives alone with carers I hope it gives him a bit more regular contact with people other than his carers and me. I'm just desperate to be well enough not to risk spreading this cold to people who are vulnerable to medical problems.
the shepherds pie I made on Wednesday is still going strong but may freeze the remains as it's getting a bit boring now. So lunch will be a sandwich and don't know about dinner yet. OH is coming for the weekend so will have to plan more than usual. also friends coming for lunch on Monday.
Hope everyone is OK and have a good day all.

    Morning all,

Brrr seems cold here this morning, feeling a bit better today, its on the way out, another day and hopefully I shall be normal again :D

Off to work for me, but finish a bit earlier, so not too bad, not sure what's for dinner tonight, will have to go and check my list.

Will put a wash on in a while and get OH to hang it out, he is still off work with a sore wrist, cant carry anything.

DD is off college today, but is off to work, for the day, she will have to wrap up warm as she is outside on the farm today.

Good luck to young Ben xx

Topsy, I would give him money too, but I would make sure it was the bare minimum and make sure he paid every penny back, I hope he can get some help.

    Have good days all xx
  • Good morning all,

    Good morning all,

    FB congrats to your friend

It's cold but bright here so I'm wrapped up. Off out with dh this morning and then Mr A's for food shopping. Just going to print off my £5 voucher from last week. Don't need loads just fresh stuff really.
Tiglath you've given me a hankering for roast veg, and somebody mentioned parsnips so will get some, I love parsnips but only tend to eat them at Xmas!
Had a nice day out with dh yesterday. Still haven't bought my outfit for the wedding. Tried the dress on again but can't decide (have an issue with chunky legs:() even though it is beautiful.
My dil to be has said just hang on until you get here there is some lovely summer stuff in the shops over there so may well do that.
A no spend wkend for us. Hubby is still coughing and driving me mad. Sorry my patience runs out after a couple of days. I would have made a terrible nurse.
Going to do my research for the interview on Monday morning today. My tummy turns over just thinking about it.
Stay warm and safe today J x

Hugs to Molly, PP & Hilstep
WM & DW both running, fish fed, hubby dropped at work with his packup. No work for me 'til next Tuesday so the plan is to run round like blue arrised fly & get all the cleaning & shopping done today so hubby & I can have a relaxing week together next week.
I read all the posts remembering Diva yesterday, a lovely lady.
Night before last hubby got a text from his boss at work at 2:30 in the morning!!!! The text came through 3 times, woke me up & as FIL has been in hospital lately I thought it was maybe about him, wasn't impressed to find it said 'Did you remember to phone the gardeners'.
I'm off to the butchers, bakers, but not the candlestick makers, lol.
    Have a good day everyone.
    Hugs Hester
