What's the most economical used 4x4/SUV

fueling, tax, maintence, insurance on a 4x4 will be a lot dearer than your present car
your only real affordable options are fiat doblo, vw caddy/touran or any similar van based cars or people carriers
van based cars have all the toys (sat nav, air con, leather seats, sports packs etc) that cars have
there is no point having a 4x4 if your not going to use it as a 4x4 or even having a 4x4 with switchable 4 wheel drive-for example toyota hilux or nissan navaro, your still having to move all the weight of the drivetrain they also dont do many mpg and if your worried about maintence costs most 4x4 manuals will tell you to change all 4 tyres at a time or the minimun of axle at a time0 -

Here are my mpg and they are the true ones...31mpg motorway and 21mpg around town..It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.0 -

Sorry if my post was unclear but I didn't question the validity of any 4x4.
My point was that there is a spectrum of 4x4s which can suit the needs of most all the way from heavy off roading (LR etc) to cover for snow/dirt roads (e.g. CRV with part time 4x4).
What I was trying to get at was that costs obviously depend on type of 4x4 and obviously a CRV type would be cheaper for some that uses it more as a car. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
CRV for me too, but my current diesel Vauxhall Zafira is very economical and has huge space inside when needed. Bit of a slug though!0

your still having to move all that excess weight of the drivetrain for a "plastic" 4x4 crv's are not that good on fuel
as above get a zafira but get the top of the range diesel (150ps) and find one with the "design" trim you'll get half leather seats, auto wipers and headlights and all the usual extras. there alot bigger than the bora with decent performance and a good mpg0
