I don't know much about cars but I have a nissan xtrail and it costs a fortune to run. It works out for me at around 25ppm to run it and a full tank of diesel is around £80. I think road tax is around £250.

It looks nice, handles very well, feels safe and secure but is definitely not cheap to run so one to score off your list if it was ever on it!

Have you considered a first generation Jeep Patriot 2007 - 2009. They use the VW TDI engine and will do 42MPG. Quite a nice drive as well.

You need a front wheel drive estate: Mondeo/Passat/A4/Golf, etc. Or a MPV: Smax/C4 Picasso, etc.

You don't need a 4x4 - there are no economical 4x4/SUVs because they are heavy and you end up paying for petrol/brakes/tyres/tax.

If thats a bit unconventional for you then i have to agree with Buellguy above, Berlngo and its sisters and Doblo and Kangoo all being van based MPV's are robust enough for the sort of thing you have in mind, not great street cred if that matters but proper workhorses.

Those three aren't linked. The Berlingo and the Partner are the same van, differnt badge, any generally very dependable.

    Kangoos ain't bad.

Don't forget the Vauxhall combo with the older 1.7 engine. They're not common in full people carrier trim, but there's a fair few crew vans about.

All should see 50mpg as a minimum. Vehicles logbooked as cars will be cheaper to tax generally, one's logbooked as vans may be cheaper to put on your insurance.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

Octavia estate if you dont need the extra running costs that come with the 4x4 version.

Focus estate. or a step up in size but more car for your money a Mondeo estate.
Huge space, Refined and sensible fuel consumption on a run. Bit heavy at short stop start journeys but most cars will so ignore the MPG lies.

All vans cost the standard £220 for 12 months VED. My neighbour gets 40+ mpg out of his '53' LDV Pilot 1.9 TD. It also has the advantage of 3 rear seats as it is an ex-Royal Mail crewbus.

If you are brave then got for a 4x4 or van with a diesel engine capable of running on waste veg. oil. Saves a fortune.

No quite, Euro 4 and 5 compliant vehicles registerred in certain years are taxed at a different rate, as are pre-2001 vehicles under 1549cc

However, if it's a van based car, then it's taxed as a car.

  • I find my 4x4 pretty cheap to run, it's 2005 Kia Sportage.

Tax comes in about 230ish for the year, around the same for insurance. I'll get about 40mpg on average, more on big runs. I find it not much more expensive than regular cars i've had before.

I did a lot of research before buying a 4x4 and this one looked the best for reasonable running costs, the research paid off!

    Not all SUV's are 4x4.

Some have 2 wheel drive options, some have selectable 4 wheel drive while others like the CRV only drive the front wheel during normal driving and only engage the rear wheels when there is slip on the front. These are more economical and should be the ones you consider.
