Thanks for the replies. Our current Mondeo is an 03, 1.8petrol and the mileage it is returning even on motorway journeys is awful, round about 37mpg - its done 100k so although it would mechanically be fine for a while it is getting to the stage where it will soon need replacing - the deal breaker is the appalling MPG .Starting MB- looking for Raf offers.

If you are going for a petrol or automatic model, then both are good cars - Jag has better image (subjectively).
However, if you are going for a manual diesel, then beware of the dreaded dual-mass flywheel issue. If you check here, you will see the problem. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/dual-mass-flywheels/
I believe it is quite common and expensive, so beware if buying one with heavy mileage.0 -
I found my old Mondeo to be comfortable, well equipped, cheap and good to drive; but it's reliability and general build quality were crap.
While I've not had any reliability issues yet with my Mondeo, I will agree that the interior build quality in particular is hopeless. Everything is clipped together, it rattles and breaks apart in your hand if you don't treat it with kid-gloves.
The Focus I had before was tinny, noisy and unrefined, but at least it was well screwed together.
It amazes me that some Japanese manufacturers are slated for poor perceived build, yet their "cheap" plastics never seem to break up.0 -
DMF is under £600 for a decent quality kit fitted. Good for 100,000 miles ore more if treated properly.
But lots of cars from the year 2000 onwards have them. And they fail as often.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Is there much room for haggling on the price of a used Jaguar from an approved dealer?Starting MB- looking for Raf offers.

Before you take the plunge, do some sums on how many miles you would need to do before you recover the cost of changing the car. You might be surprised.
If, however, you really just want a new car and the mpg is how you're justifying it to yourself, fill yer boots
