Mondeo or X-type

Hi

We need to replace our 03 Mondeo as my wife has changed jobs and now does about 400 miles per week so needs something that is solid and gives good mileage.

We have been looking at 09 Mondeos and X-types. 2.0L diesels, surprisingly considering I thought they were basically the same car - the Jag does 10mpg more and is £100 less road tax than the Mondeo, and you can get a lower mileage Jag for less than the same year Mondeo Titanium(or x) which compares two cars with round about the same spec( although the Jag does have all leather interior and a few other bells and whistles)

The fact is I can get a lower mileage Jag that fuelwise is going to be cheaper to run and will be a bit cheaper to buy than an equivalent Mondeo , so I am leaning towards the Jag.

The fact both cars are mechanically the same under the skin is there going to be much difference in the price of repairs and service between the two> And why in fact is the 2.0L Jag cheaper than the same age Mondeo?

We have about 12 grand to spend so was wondering about thoughts on how good these cars are for high mileage coverage and reliability and whether there is anything else we should look at?

By 09 the two cars were completely different.

The X type will have a Ford engine, the Mondeo a PSA unit. The sound deadening on the X type is far superior to the Mondeo.

An 09 X type will be one of the last produced. Go for an SE, Sovereign if you can find one and it will have plenty of toys.

My X type ate front tyres for fun, lowest was 8,000 miles from a pair of Goodyears.
  • I thought the point to the x type was getting 4WD and the mondeo was good basic car, the highlight being the V6 2.5l which was relatively amazing

While I'm a huge Jag fan, for their ridiculous hit or miss reliability I wouldn't touch a diesel X Type with a bargepole. Bear in mind too its an obsolete model and wont be particularly missed.

My husband wants an X type. We are looking at a 2.5 v6 manual petrol at the weekend. We have researched and reviews seem good - in fact much better than our current car! TBH there's good and bad in all makes of car, I had, years ago an Austin Allegro and that car never ever let me down - yet they were slated!! Not quite the same I know, but we are going to take the plunge. Out of the 2 cars I would go for the Jag. Mondeo's are good, honest cars and there's plenty about, but my personal preference is the Jag, it looks lovely and is a tiny bit prestige!!

I have an x type 2 litre diesel estate. Best car I've ever had. Drives like a dream, economical to run, plenty of gadgets (most of which I don't know how to use).

But the parts are stupidly expensive. All are main dealer parts and you can't get patented equivalents. I need a new wing mirror, but its going to cost £200.

Think about the parts costs before you make a decision.

We have balanced the parts costs on the fact that my Izusu trooper parts are stupidly cheap, plus plenty of spares around second hand. So running my trooper plus a Jag is going to be comparable to a mid range family hatchback. We looked into having a nearly new small car, but they are expensive to buy, parts are harder to find unless you go main dealer, and I need a towcar for livestock and horse trailers as well as a vehicle capable of reaching livestock in rubbish conditions so the trooper must stay! We are getting towards the wrong side of 40 now, so want a comfortable, executive car to visit relatives 200 miles away, doing that journey in a kia picanto etc isn't something I'd look forward to - would rather take the Trooper!! For me the Jag comes out tops, can pick a reasonable mileage, FSH job up for 2.5k and parts are slightly cheaper than Audi !!

Don't forget for that money you can get a 03-54 plate 2.7D S-Type which is far superior in every way to the X.

Different era, I know, but what makes you think that your current car can’t cope with 400 miles per week?

More than 20 years ago my 10 year old Morris Marina (1300 cc) saw me through 18 months of doing 500 miles per week.

With advice, I put good tyres on it but, apart from that and regular servicing, it did the job.

My Mondeo (2.0 TDCi) does around 800 miles a week, it's 8 years old with 185k on the clock, averages around 54 MPG.

I'd certainly buy another, I imagine for a start it's cheaper to service than the Jag and would be surprised if the Jag had better MPG.

  • Brother has a 2006 X-Type state and I've owned a 2002 Mk3 Mondeo hatchback. For some reason the X-Type is far less spacious inside. I also find the half-leather seats really uncomfortable, and the built in sat-nav is an absolute pile of crap (literally TomTom's cheapest model is 100x better). It has all the same niggly sensor and emissions control issues as the Mondeo (and probably every other modern diesel) despite spending it's life on the motorway.

I found my old Mondeo to be comfortable, well equipped, cheap and good to drive; but it's reliability and general build quality were crap. I now have a much older E36 3-series BMW that is a better car by all measures.

So I'd personally spend the same money on something a bit older but German.
