Buying a car and temporary insurance whilst picking it up

I am due to buy a 3 year old car soon, and have put my old one up for sale.

My question is; I will have to pick it up, but my insurance is only on the old car (I am covered to drive other cars not belonging to me)

Is it legal to drive the new car back home and then ring my insurance company up to get it covered.

I don't want to get it covered before I buy it as I don't know whether the sale will go through if I don't like it.

what are my options?

You could call your insurnance company from the current owners house and have your policy changed to the new car, but then your old car would need to be off the public highway.

A one month policy with ecarinsurance would allow you to have both cars on the road for a month whilst you sell the other. However, your NCB, would only apply to one vehicle.

We have always just phoned the insurance company at the sellers address and put the new car onto our current car insurance, this is added as a temporary vehicle at a small premium, this then allows you to drive both cars for the month,if you haven't sold the other car,it can be extended on a month by month basis until sold. Both cars remain fully insured and legal. We have done this with 3 insurance companies,More than,L & G,and Norwich Union.

£10 or so will see you insured for a day. Try either Norwich Union Short Term Cover or Day Insure to start with.

Driving without insurance, while low risk, still carries that risk. For the sake of a few quid, I'd suggest you get yourself cover.

Thanks. Thats handy to know, in the first instance I'll call my insurance company (esure.com) and see if they can give me cover for a month whilst I sell my old car, if not then I'll go for the sort term cover from one of the sites mentioned above.
