As it is a booking for a special occasion and on a particular date, I can fully understand your disappointment and I would imagine it is not some much major compensation you are looking for but for the special trip to go ahead as planned.
If I was in your position I would consider it worth an email to the CEO stating something along the lines of the fact that you had booked the hotel some months ago for your wife's birthday as a surprise and had arranged time off work and were really looking forward to staying in their hotel. You were disappointed and shocked to receive a phone call today (two days prior to your stay) stating that the hotel would not be honoring your booking as an administration error had been made and they had just discovered the booking. Whilst you were offered an alternative date of stay and refund, you do not find this fair or acceptable as your wifes's brthday will have passed without the anticipated and planned surprise break. You want them to look into providing accomodation at the hotel on the date booked (X date) or that they arrange and pay for hotel of a similar standard in the same area on X date. Email for the CEO seems to be:

It sounds like they have overbooked..
Normally when this happens, the rules are that they find you accommodation of similar standard nearby (and a phone call and transportation if you arrive and it happens), plus maybe drinks, dinner etc as goodwill gesture.
I would ask them if that is the case and if so can they locate you to another hotel of equal standard at no additional cost to yourself.
They have other hotels in the chain who ought to be able to accommodate you, if you can be flexible on area, otherwise ask them to find somewhere suitable in the same area as them.0 -
If they are offering you another room, could you arrange it for the day /night before her birthday, have a lovely liesurely breakfast, spend the day away and go home, chill for the birthday with a bottle of wine/takeaway.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

Our kids have things on a Fri night and sat morning.
I also work so cant get a day off at the drop of a hat.
This is my main point if they had told me 2 weeks ago then yes we might have been able to rearrange but with 48 hrs notice there not really much i can do
