So why didn't they re-elect Labour last time?
They didn't kick them right into touch either though did they. It's because Labour had created such an almighty shambles and that was fresh in the minds. Now a new Labour leadership will start with new promises, the coalition is unpopular, and a lot with have short memories and want to give Labour another chance.No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.
The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.

Reminds me of this joke ...
It was autumn, and members of a Native American tribe asked their new Chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was a new Chief in a modern society and had never been taught the old secrets of Nature, he looked up at the sky and had no clue what to do. To play it safe, he replied to his tribe that the winter could definitely be cold and that they should collect firewood early, just to be prepared. So, the members began gathering wood.
Being a practical leader, he figured he should also use the resources available to the modern society. He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, "Will this winter be cold?"
"As of now, it looks like this winter is going to be quite cold," the forecaster said.
So the Chief went back to his tribe and told them to collect even more wood. A week later he called the National Weather Service again and asked for an update.
"Yes," the man at National Weather Service again replied, "based on incoming data, this winter is looking to be colder than we expected." The Chief was surprised, but again went back to his tribe, told them that this might be a very cold winter, and asked them to collect every scrap of wood they could find.
One week later, the Chief called the National Weather Service yet again, hoping for a new answer. "Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?"
"Positive," the man replied. "It's going to be one of the coldest winters ever."
"Really?" the shocked Chief exclaimed. "How can you be so sure?"
"First," the forecaster replied, "The Indians are collecting firewood like crazy."0 -

Unpopular maybe. However given the financial circumstances the UK is in. What's the alternative? As there's no quick fix. Just a long long road ahead.0 -

You and I know that but a lot of short-termist, none-too-bright voters will not see it that way.
On the subject of the GDP figure for Q3, I believe the vast majority of Olympic Games tickets were bought and paid for prior to Q3, so I don't see that the games will have had much, if any, of a once-off beneficial effect in that quarter. I expect the BBC came up with that one, in their desperate attempt to find something negative about coming out of recession.No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. One alternative would be to have, say, 10 year election cycles. It would give more chance for any government to tackle the longer term issues.
Or failing that, some system of re-electing only 20% of MPs every 2 years on a revolving basis.0 -

Be careful what you wish for -- that could have given us eight years of Gordon Brown.No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.

Prefer coalition politics. Than 10 year stints.0 -

I like the thought - not sure how it would work (mix, region etc) it would be more of a return under guarantee message.
Downside would be more promenading for re-election and even less real focus."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

On the plus side they would either have been truly dead and buried or their policies may have been shown to have worked."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....
