No proof of address, any ideas?

I need proof of my address for a mortgage application. They (YBS) accept any of the usual things EXCEPT council tax bills, for some reason. They list it as acceptable on their website but have specified to me that I can't use one.

Unfortunately I get no other bills in the post, and don't have any paper bank statements. Even if I did, they're not registered to this address because I just left them on my old (parents') address, having been at five different addresses since! To change the address at my bank I need to give them proof of my address, too. Perhaps they'd accept a tenancy agreement, so I could take that to my bank (not the same as the lender), change my address there, request a paper statement posted (paying for it, I suppose), wait for it to arrive, then send that to YBS.

In case I'm missing something obvious, does anyone have any better ideas?

Thanks,

  • Other things you may use:

    Driving Licence/Counterpart
    NHS letter
Any HMRC letter addressed to you

If you have a Bank account with Natwest, they usually give you over the counter print out of your statement. This usually has all your details including Name, Address, Account number etc. I used this for an immigration application (completely acceptable).

    Hope this helps

You should be able to obtain a proof of address letter from your utility providers.

You should be on the voters roll where you live - so polling card may be accepted in lieu of the standard.

Your bank account should be registered to where you live - this will be pulled up on the status checks, and they may well ask for an explanation

Driving licence (photo card and paper bit), HMRC confirmation as stated by Harvey

If your wage slips are sent to you, instead of hand delivered in work, this may suffice if all else fails.

The reason for the POR is to prove that you aren't living somewhere else with a shed load of bad debt (that may not be linked to you under the CRAs), and using a nice "clean" address for your application - has been known I've seen that and even more creative methods to hide trashed addresses ... so thats why they are being picky about what they will accept (although TBH surprised on the council tax bill and statement being rejected, but they'll have their reasons)

    Hope this helps

Presumably they've given you a list?

    What's on it?

Lenders usually have a back-up plan for times like this. You need to ask them what it is. We can speculate all day, but only the horse's mouth is going to be 100% accurate here.

Hmm, that's strange. I obtained a mortgage with YBS in March and remember sending them my tenancy agreement, council tax bill, and some bank statements/proof of deposit, as well as my employment contract and some other bits and pieces. They were all copies made in a YBS branch and stamped on the back. I believe they accepted the tenancy agreement together with the council tax bill as proof of address. However, I was registered to vote at that address, so that could have helped. I should add that I moved house seven times within six years before moving into my current place, but that didn't pose any problems with regards to the application.

I suggest you give them a call. I have always found them helpful on the phone. My application was approved very quickly with no hassle whatsoever.

    Good luck!

None of the documents mention so far here are registered at this address, I'm afraid. Passport/DL are both old addresses (obviously I didn't seek to change them each time I moved) and I get no utility bills. All I have a tenancy agreement.

I'm not on the electoral roll because I never bothered to go into the town hall and ask to be put on it.

I have indeed phoned them and they said they want a utility bill or bank statement, so I will have to basically "engineer" one, ironically, instead of providing legitimate existing evidence (C-tax bill and tenancy agreement).

If all your credit agreements and information on Experian/Equifax/Call Credit show your old address, you are basically asking for trouble.

Lenders like consistency in the information you provide and the information they get from your credit files. If there are differences the automated checks usually fail. This is where you need to have a proactive lender that has a human touch to understand the whole picture.

To run thing quicker, I would say you do the following things in order:

    - Get to your bank branch and change your address then and there
    - Ask to get a branch copy of your statement showing your new address and stamped by the branch, if the statement shows all the information on bank headed paper than no need of stamp
    - Go to - https://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk, print the form and post to get registered (possibly its too late for you now)

You did not kept the things in order, thus the extra hassle. Hopefully your broker would be able to help along the way...

PS - I would not recommend leaving your DL registered to your old address, it is illegal to leave it like that.

Having your passport and DL at an incorrect address is an offence - so you really should sort that immediately TBH.

You dont have to engineer (which if deduced by the lender is fraud, and you will be declined due to this and poss put on the CIFAS register) - all you need to do is contact your utility provider and ask them to send you a current statement to your home address - job done.

Please, please don't go down the route of fabricating any kind of docs .... you may land yourself in a whole world of trouble for future mge or finanical apps.

I had no idea. So all those students who move house three times in as many years have to get a new passport and DL each time? I left my parents' house in 2005 and just left things registered there, which made the most sense as I can always be reached via them. I've lived in four houses long-term since, and several shorter term. Surely no one changes everything each time?

Engineer, not fabricate. As in, I will have to go and ask people to give me a letter or statement showing my address, rather than using something "natural", if you see what I mean. Which kind of defeats the purpose for the lender, it seems. The only natural and incidental official letters I receive are council-tax bills.

I don't pay any utilities at my house, so that's out of the question.

Unfortunately you do have to have the correct address on your DL and registered passport - no matter how inconvient it may be to effect the changes (and I know its a pain and costs each time), but I don't make the rules

Not paying any utiilty bills - are you in a shared accomodation, rent a room etc ??

Shared, yes - council tax is my only responsibility there. Other bills are picked up by my housemates or the landlord. A common situation, of course.
