When hiring a car, do they insist on a credit card or will a debit card suffice?

I've always used a debit card, never had a problem with Enterprise, Thrifty or Europcar (and all the other names they encompass).
I've never insured my excess and always been find (Europcar didn't spot that I'd damaged 3 of their vans 3 weeks running :rotfl:).Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

so wanted to know if there is a general rule about these matters - it appears some you can (but you pay extra or a deposit) most you cant, but thanks skivenov for the constructive answer.0
