going to struggle to pay car tax on time...

You've got a couple of weeks leeway into the following month, but you must not drive the car or park it on the road.
If you go a bit longer, there is a cutoff point at which the local post office can't do it and you have to go to the nearest DVLA office, which might be a few quid train or bus fare away.0 -
Pay for the VED with a cheque. That gives you a fewe days to lend the money to put in your bank for when the cheque clears.0

I've never encountered any PO cut off point, not saying it doesn' exist though. If when you visit he PO and that is the case, and the car has been off road for the duration you might aswell enter a SORN online and buy a disc starting from the 1st of the following month. (which is what I did last month).0 -
Don't think I've ever bought tax in time... Can't you borrow cash, get a credit card?
Even a payday loan will probably work out cheaper than a potential fine0 -
Just to add a bit here.. I used to be a CEO for a council. CEOs like the police can report untaxed vehicles to the DVLA.
Now I don't know about police reports but the DVLA don't do anything with CEO reports unless the date is at least two weeks past the tax disc expiry. DVLA don't admit to loopholes or leniency but thats basically what it is. If they prosecuted / fined everyone who was a few days late with their renewal they would struggle to keep up with it all.
As I said, no idea how seriously they take police reports though and ANPR is all over the place these days.0
