You will only get fined if its parked on a public road and out of tax. And even at that only if by chance police walk past it and checks your tax disc. Can you park it in a driveway for a week until u can renew it?

Parked off the highway on private land not a public carpark and you will be OK for a week.

If its longer then get it off the road and SORN it.

  • Can you afford 6 months? Your insurance is invalid if you haven't got a tax disc and they don't care if you can't afford it. I've been there-my parents lent me the money luckily though I know not everybody is as lucky as I am.

Parked off the highway on private land or a public or private carpark and you will be OK until the end of the first month after expiry, as long as, when you renew your tax you tax it from the beginning of the first month after expiry (i.e. you must not leave a gap in the tax)

You will after 3 weeks get a warning from DVLA to tax your vehicle "last chance" letter, you can still let it go until towards the end of the month.. butyou MUST tax from the start of the first month - leave no gap.

If you leave a gap, you get automatic £100 fine, unless you decide to fight them by saying you declared SORN.

If you are on the highway/ on the road (does not include car parks) you will be risking a fine for no tax and not displaying tax if a warden or police spots the car.

Insurance is not affected by lack of tax.

If you're intending to drive it without a valid tax disc it might be worth having a closer look at those other 'bills' and ask what would be the consequences of letting them drift for a few weeks.

Or a police car with an ANPR camera or a DVLA vehicle with the ANPR.

DVLA vehicle will leave you alone until after the end of the first month. But if you then fail to tax and you say you were SORN then they may well flag it up that you were spotted on the xx/xx/2012

Thats nothing compared to the punishment for giving the wrong information out on a forum.

Disclaimer, yeah, doing it was wrong, I accept that, but:

My record was 20 months driving about on a SORN (bad time of my life, needed a vehicle for work, spiralling debts, choice of tax the van or eat). After 10 months I got a letter in the post saying it had been spotted (DVLA contractors spotter van at a guess) 2 months previously and to sort it out (no fine!).

Then eventually, I was working down London and they clamped it.

Actually still worked out cheaper than the 2 tax discs I'd not bought though!

Separately, I forgot to SORN a vehicle the other month, I got a last-chance reminder to do it in the post after 2 weeks.

Ultimately though, you're a grown up, you're liable for your actions. Can't do the time, don't do the crime, etc.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
