Yes standard practice is you'll be at the bottom. If you won't accept that, I wonder where you're going to do any better?!

I believe there may be some performance related pay element within some areas of CS.

I was recruited into the CS this way almost 15 years ago. After the assessments they decided I was suitable for HEO roles. So in I went at the bottom of the HEO grade at £17/18k. Increment each year plus cost of living rises, and promotions took me to £60k (London) in 4 years. Moved back home to a salary of £44k. Yes, good pay and experience all round, but bloody hard work.

ETA: in my 'home' organisation, 5 increments took you to the top of the scale in each grade - each increment being worth £2-3k. The dept I was a senior manager in in London had a similar sized pay scale, but increases were a percentage change based on your performance. Somebody hitting the top pass every year would take 18-20 years to get from bottom to top of scale.

If its the CS fast stream (graduate programme) you get bumped up the grades in 4/5 years to Grade 7 (say 45-55k pa) subject to performance.

Most of us have to do it the hard way and wait our turn!

It won't be. A) wrong time of year and b) fast stream doesn't have an EO element. Also, grades only get bumped if your assessed performance is at the desired level.

I did HEO to G7 as a new recruit in less than 3 years.

    Thanks everyone.

The posts were advertised as EO/HEO/SEO within the Cabinet Office. I am aware of the difference in levels between them. The level of salary and post level will be decided during recruitment - dependent upon amount of experience brought by the candidate. Therefore there is some leeway for discussion and negotiation. I was simply curious as to whether entry point is ever negotiated within a band rather than purely which band.

For those who did not seem to like the question, having a minimum salary one will accept does not designate a poor attitude but simply demonstrates that a person knows what they want in order to accept a post. Why would a person leave one role for another unless the terms of employment are what they are looking for? :-)

    Many thanks for your replies!

I can believe it, our grade 6 was a HEO a few years ago, he is a project manager and was promoted through the ranks quickly on the back of a high profile project.

I'm with you 100% but you will have to get used to these attitudes/opinions in the CS or else it will drive you crazy!

Don't let me put you off though, the CS can be a great place to work as exemplified by mildred1978's experience.

Good luck with your interview, do post how you get on.

The voluntary redundancy package was even better than the work experience :rotfl:
