Paying car insurance by cheque

My dd's car insurance runs out on 28th. We are sending a cheque first class today which should arrive at the insurers tomorrow. It won't have cleared by the 28th, does anyone know if this means her insurance won't have activated or be valid on 28th? Will they need that cheque to have cleared?

The cheque is a charity cheque and not a personal cheque if that makes any difference.

Many thanks.

Ask the insurers, or check with them online if you can once the new policy should have started.
I would guess they'd say the policy starts on the agreed start date if they have the cheque. Obviously, if the cheque does not clear then the policy will be cancelled and no possible claims against it would be honoured.

  • First of all check that they accept cheques, many dont.

Secondly, ask them.... assuming you are talking a renewal most insurers automatically use the same payment method as was used for last years (DD, credit card or whatever) but evidently if you paid cheque last year as well then the renewal letter really should have said about how and when payment must be made

Thirdly, why is a charity paying for your daughters car insurance?

I've since discovered that some companies don't accept cheques. I've searched Diamond Insurance and can't see anywhere that they don't so am hoping they do!

Last year the charity gave me a cheque and I paid by credit card. I no longer have a credit card so that option is not open to me this year. I had asked the charity if they could pay directly to the insurance company meaning perhaps they could pay by phoning and giving their card details or by bank transfer but they have just given me a cheque payable to Diamond. I've sent it first class now and will see what they say but life will be very difficult if her insurance isn't activated on 28th or there is any significant delay.

Can you please explain the relevance of the third question?

    Thanks for your help though.

    Phone them and ask.
On their "Contact Us" page is an 0871 number plus a number for calling from abroad, which you could try if 0871 numbers are more expensive for you to call.

Thanks LV. I'm in a bit of a panic as to how to get this done quickly. I'm worried about using my bank account in case the DWP/LA to a check on my account and wonder whether the money came from/went - couldn't cope with any investigation though would do this if it was the only way. Also I'm wondering if the charity will want the Diamond cheque back before they issue another, then they would want to send another, I would need it cleared as I don't have that kind of money and we kind of need it all done by 28th. This is my fault I should have applied for funding sooner but I've not been well and things need to wait with me for a better day or week to do anything. Something like this causes me stress when it should be so simple.

You might not be happy with what i am about to tell you.

There is something called continuous payment authority most car insurers use this, if you have not cancelled this since last year they will apply for the funding from the card used last year and as far as i know the the bank can open a closed account to pay this.
