bad bad bad bad bad bad day

sorry guys but my turn to moan

just got home from work ( am supposed to finish at 4.30pm ) but had to go to a meeting at 4.30 with a collegue to be told that one of us is going to be made redundant in the next 2 weeks :( and thats it ! we have been given a number of somebody to contact to discuss this in our human resources dept but they work part time so will not be back in till Monday and we were told that we would have to go to a meeting at our head office some time next week but they dont know when. Am gutted as I know it will be me that goes because my collegue looks after an account with my company that they will just not upset under any circumstance.
so I decided to treat DD & I to a take away for dinner as it was so late ( yes I know not a good idea seeing as how I may be made redundant next week ) I put my card into the machine and it said no ???? so I tried again and again but still said no ??? so I called the bank and they said there was no reason my card shouldnt work so I tried again a bit later and still it said no  so I went into tescos to get cashback and got refused at the till ( highly embarassing ) I actually got paid yesterday so now I am getting worried that my account has been hi jacked to I phoned the bank again. This time I was told that there had been a stop placed on my card for no reason by mistake - they apologised, lifted to stop and I was so happy that my account had not been hi jacked that I was relieved.
Im going to get in touch with ACAS tomorrow morning and also we have a employee helpline which I am also going to try as well as getting myself back on the books at recruitment agencies.

am now going to pour myself a nice glass of wine and try to calm myself down or I will never sleep tonight.

Oh no oops, that really sucks :( *hugs*

How long have you been with the company? There's such a thing as statutory redundancy now

have been with them for 4 1/2 years and was actually head hunted for the job from another company which I worked at for 4 years - thats one of the things that makes me so mad. If I had stayed with the other company I would not have been treated this way - they promised so much but when It came to it they have really treated me badly.
there have been other jobs advertised internally a couple of months ago that one or both of us could have easily moved to but it doesnt seem as if they have even looked into this option. The poor guy that had to give us the news is senior to us but not our manager so he really couldnt help - he has known about this for 2 weeks but I was on holiday last week so this was his first opportunity to see us both.
I was in tears, my friend was in tears and her daughter was in tears when she got home. I have told my DD but have told her not to worry - Mummy always manages to sort out something. Am just so sick of having to fight for everything - just when I had sorted myself out this happens

Have a good night sleep then in the morning pop over to the benefits board and find out about redundancy so you're financially covered for now.

Head-hunted, wow, that's excellent. I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding another job :)

    Best of luck xx

If this company has been treating you shittily this might end up being a good thing in a months time.

You have skills. They are valuable. "Headhunted" tells me that. You may argue if you wish.

Someone with valuable skills will not remain out of work for long - assuming you're right about you being out of work in the first place.

Perhaps this "golden customer" has withdrawn, which has prompted this cut-back?

Isn't there a chance it will not be you that has to leave?
You are debt free, so if you do get made redundant, it could have happened at a worse time.
You were head hunted, so your expertise is known and highly regarded, therefore getting another job should be a doddle.
You don't like working for this company by the sound of it, so they could be doing you a favour in the long run.
Hope things work out well for you.

sorry Im being very negative - I will just have to see how things go tomorrow when I can get on the phone and start looking around. After this and other things they have done to me I just want to go now anyway and so does my collegue.
I have just looked at a recruitment agency on line that was recommended to me and I am 99% sure that one of the jobs on offer in my area is with another division with my company :( they really dont seem to be even trying to keep us or they could move one of us to another division and the other could keep the job
they said it is because they are going to be losing a big manufacturing contract ( nothing to do with us ) over the next 13 months so they are cutting back now even though we have new business coming on - it doesnt make sense nor does it add up in my books :(

  • So sorry to hear you news. I will keep my fingers crossed for you that everything turns out okay.

Looking at your signature, at least you have cleared your debts and will be going into this on a clear footing debtwise. Think how panicked you would be if you still had debts as well as redundancy.

I agree with everyone elses comments - people don't get headhunted unless they are very skilled and amazingly good at what they do. You should be proud of yourself.

Take some time over the next few days and sort out your CV - you might not need it, but it doesn't hurt to start looking for jobs now and having your CV ready and updated is a must. If it is you that is selected for redundancy - don't leave for another job before you get any redundancy money you may be due (I not really clued up on redundancy issues, but think that if you leave for another job before the redundancy kicks in you may not be deemed to be made redundant and therefore won't get any redundancy money - I'm sure others on this site are more knowledgeable than me and will put you straight on this point).

Most important of all - keep you chin up and believe in yourself.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Again - I'm not up on redundancy rights etc. but I don't think the company can legally make you redundant and advertise the same, or substantially similar post. They can only make you redundant if the job you are employed to do no longer exists or the need to cut costs means staff numbers must be reduced (eg don't need as many staff as they have lost contracts etc). But if they are advertising a job in another division that is substantially the same post you are in then I don't think they are allowed to do this.

It might be worth taking some employment advice, perhaps from CAB.
