I followed one a few weeks ago, where the instructor had the learner signal right at every one of a series of roundabouts where they were going straight on (all had left and right exits as well). No left signal to come off either.

There's another one near us who is always on his phone, whether he's driving or one of his pupils.

Presumably you were also a learner once? Either that or you aren't a driver at all in which case you don't know what you're talking about.

When people learn to drive, one of the things people are always unsure about is "What do I do if the lights start to change when I'm already at them?" Any experienced driver obviously knows that the answer is "It depends on how close and fast you are, stop if it is possible and safe to do so."

People who are learning find it difficult to know if they are going to be able to stop, and what you are witnessing is learners who should be stopping at the red but are misjudging it. What would you like to happen exactly? Would you like the instructor to slam the brakes on, completely shattering the learners confidence and potentially causing an accident? Or would you like the instructor to use his judgement, allow the driver to continue, and calmly explain the mistake as he probably is doing?

Ok my bold, sorry, BUT just what the hell do you think is more likely by allowing a learner to go through a red light - Oh let me think, AN ACCIDENT

It surprises me how many more people can pull up in time when there is a camera on the lights versus gatso free junctions! - Doesn't surprise me - it winds me right up

The standard of driving by some instructors does make you wonder how they manage to teach others.

Not just a case of do as i say not as i do may apply to some, But actual poor lane control and total lack of anticipation.

When i took lessons my instructor drove to a quiet spot for the 1st couple of lessons. Always drove as he taught. But on the way home from me passing my test he was doing 40 in a 30 limit. 1 hand on the wheel etc.

But he did say, Get yourself a car and go and learn how to really drive now.

Any instructor who does not duel a learner to prevent them going through a red deserves to be sacked and banned. People go all through the stages of learning largely through one, single instructor in their lifetimes and never update their skills or take further training. (Just look around you and see the crap driving of a large number of legally licence-holding drivers).
At the very least report the instructor to their company, when my ex worked for a driving school it was driven at all times, with learners in or not, as if she was on a test. The car is a mobile advert and if the instructor is so wayward in their skills, they shouldn't be in the job.

I have to say the problems I have had are with instructors alone in a car, not with a pupil. I've been cut up countless times by instructors, but never by pupils. Been tailgated by instructors, never by pupils. If that's how they teach someone else to drive, then no wonder some people drive like they learnt at Mr Bean's driving school!
  • Trouble is that as Red is a franchise and each car is run as a separate business for the driving instructor in each car, ie the "boss" of the small company comprising the liveried car and the driving instructor, complaining to him or her about his/her bad driving and poor teaching methods is unlikely to get a good response...........

I assure you that Franchise holders will be much more likely to act against a franchisee breaking the terms of their agreement (bad driving!) than say, father of son/daughter running the one-car family business operation. Marketing money is important to serious businesses.

20m to traffic lights, they would cover about 19m to 20m before the light turns to red
  • I agree about bad driving instruction out there, as a fully qualified driving instructor for over 8 years, I do dispair at the standard .

However, just to throw a bit on confusion to the point, was the pupil actually on their driving test? This would explain why the instructor didn't react, the only reaction would have been a line through the 'fail' part on there driving test sheet.

    Just a thought!

Was the examiner not scared for his/her life when he/she let a pupil through a red light?
