It's a relatively new thing for me, I never realised I was a carer until the doctor who made a diagnosis asked what we did for him regularly. I met with social services early last week and the women we spoke to (one was from the carers assessment place) gave me some leaflets but not much else.

Nowhere did I say that he didn't know, and I'm not sure I deserve the accusatory tone of your post. The fact he is my grandad, the fact he would be confused and that I am claiming carer's allowance for him might have been a clue that he's not totally capable of understanding what he is told.

    I agree with you, honey10.

And it's not the first time I've seen a similar post by nannytone who has misunderstood the original post and replied in an accusatory tone.

Are you getting all the support you need because of your Grandad's illness?

    Thanks for the support Pollycat.
Grandad is getting all kinds of help from social services, which should make life much easier for him, but if I'm honest, my head is spinning, I don't know which way is up at the moment.

I think in around about way what they are trying to say is, if he gets Pension Credit, he may have premuim which is payable due to DLA care award if he is classed as living alone, by applying for Carers and getting payment, this would cease which would cause his money to go down. Hence he would get a letter from PC stating his money would be changing due to this.

    exactly anmatj.

ididnt the presence of a question mark make it obvious that it was a question and not an accusation?

op ... you never stated in your first post that your grandfather has alzheimers ... just that you didnt want him to get a letter about varers allowance, sp the question i asked was quite relevant.

mpst people i know that have carers are fully mentally alert and so i would never assume that because someone receives care, they are mentally incompetant

When an award of CA is made the notification goes to the customer only i.e. the Carer. Nothing goes from the CA Unit to the person being cared for.

Attendance Allowance is unaffected by an award of CA.

Other benefits paid to the disabled person should not be affected except possibly the Severe Disability Premium - this is money paid to them to use to pay for a carer. If CA starts then this SDP money ceases as a carer has been identified. The declaration on the CA claim form for the person being cared for to sign is to alert then off this as some have complained they were not informed of the consequences of a CA claim on their money)
