On the other hand there is money to be made out there, and others rely on MS work as their sole income.

Higher paid work doesn't fall in your lap though. It's up to you to work hard and find it.

If you are happy with low/no fees that's one thing, but some people are expecting MSing to get them out of debt. MSing will (in most cases) not do that. It can actually cost you money and many people don't realise how much it has cost them until they fill in their tax return.

oh yeah i guess so seeing as its on the debt forum :o :rotfl:

fortunately i only use MSing as a short term "fun hobby" type thing IYSWIM a bit of "pocket money"

i know im not going to make a fortune from it lol

. I am doing more auditing and merchandising now to avoid situations like this. That is better paid and I am actually beginning to enjoy it more than the Mystery Shopping side of it.

Hiya, have you got any advice on where to start getting into merchandising and auditing pls? Have applied to a couple of places but don't know if there are any that will take you on if you don't have experience?

Quite agree about Gap though, the fees rarely make it worth doing for me. I did them to start with till I got registered with other companies.

I applied to IMS who couldn't take me on, but kept me on a waiting list. A merchandising job came up at very short notice, which none of the current team could do, so they asked if I could do it. I said yes, they were impressed by my work and I did more for them. Once you get experience, you get more confident which helps when applying to other companies.

Ask some of the companies you work for if they have any one off jobs to try so you can see if you like it. Merchandising isn't for everyone. You have to be confident, thick skinned and quite persuasive. Some managers will treat you like dirt and it's up to you to persuade them to let you put a stand up/bring more stock forward/put stock in promo areas or whatever the brief entails. On the other hand some managers are lovely and will do everything they can to help you.

Auditing is easier, as you don't really need to speak to anyone. Usually it's just noting down what is in store at the time of your visit and reporting any problems back rather than sorting them out while you are in store. Sometimes auditing is done covertly, which is just like mystery shopping.

If you are thinking about it, a digital camera or phone with a decent camera is a good investment. Many jobs ask you to send in pictures of what you have achieved in store, and it's handy to snap problems so the company can see exactly what the problem is.

Thanks for that Becles. I think IMS was one of the ones I applied to and I think like you said I was put on a waiting list. I think from what you say auditing sounds easier to start off with than merchandising! I may contact a few more companies and go from there.
