The sticky traps they put down after spraying should indicate if you have more coming in from next door. We only had a few and got rid with some serious spraying and steaming the bed frame and all the furniture!

On and look online for the covers, we didn't have to get the in the end but did look just in case, I found them on a pest control website but the pest control person could also have got them for us. They really are horrible little critters!

How do you get bed bugs, I have never heard of them before?

If you want a fright google it - they are very nasty and difficult to get rid off. They will just crawl on to your clothes.

Even 5 star hotels can have them but they are more likely to be found where backpackers stay.

I always check for bed bugs as soon as I step in to a hotel room because I don't want to bring them back home with me and I rarely sit on public transport for the same reason.

Yes, it's important that you know what to look for so you spot them early and then they are much easier to get rid of.

Tell-tale signs are bites on your arms and torso, itching and reddish/brown spots on the sheets where they have been squashed (so it is best to use white bottom sheets)

Through the adjoining walls and floorboards.

Yes, and they tend to walk along and bite you in a line as well. I thought we had fleas at first and was cursing the cat, but the lines of bites and red/brown blobs on the sheets gave it away. Then I squished one hiding down by the skirting board. Horrible things. They can flatten themselves and come in through the floorboards/ small gaps in the walls etc for another house.

I was told they are the same size shape and colour as a brown lentil and having done the HTDs medical entemology course I can confirm that yes they are exactly like it.

if you get a new bed smear vaseline (petroleum jelly) around the legs, as the bed bugs can crawl up the legs of the bed from the carpet and that's how they infest the bed.

DS#2 - my twenty -one son
  • I've decided to get a 5 litre container of Protector C, replace my son's bed (which looks a lot worse than I realised lol, its a divan bed so lots of places for bugs to hide, it'll be replaced with a metal bed frame and mattress), scrub, steam repeatedly everything in his room (which I've emptied as much as I can).

They may be in my other son's room as well so I'll be doing all upstairs rooms. My smaller son's room has a wooden frame cabin bed so that's going to be a bit of a nightmare. I'll just have to do what I can. Fortunately there's little infestation there, if any. But I will be double checking his bed to make absolutely sure.

I can't replace carpets so will steam and spray.

Oh dear, never thought this could happen to us.., but I'm sure everyone who has ever had bed bugs thought exactly the same lol.

Bed bugs can happen to anyone - they are found in 5 star hotels. You just need one to crawl in to your luggage or on to your clothes and your home will be infested.

Sports shops in New York have had to close because of bed bugs and hotels all around the world are affected.

The reason for the increase is simply because people are backpacking to parts of the world where they are common and bringing them back here.

Our infestation came from a 5 star hotel. Husband put his bag under the bed, which is where they transferred in, came home and put his bag under our bed, and out they came.

Well this is what the pest control man told us was most likely, as the area around the bag was worst, but they had also spread all over the room and into kids room. Timing fitted with husbands hotel stay at a work conference.

The worst bit was having such dark bedding that we never saw the signs, until I changed the bedding and saw the bed frame and mattress seemingly moving with the amount of bugs crawling around ewwww. And peoples reactions to us telling them, obviously we didn't shout about it but had to let people know as us and our kids had stayed at several houses in the past couple of weeks, and people who don't know anything about bedbugs seem to assume it's becasuse you are dirty, don't clean enough etc.

    .

Yes, another tip is not to put luggage on the floor of a hotel room - use the luggage rack or a sideboard.
