Urrgh Bed bugs.., Where Can I Buy zippable plastic mattress covers from?

Unfortunately (all I need right now lol) I've discovered at least one bedroom is infested with bedbugs. Much as I'd like it to be otherwise, there is no doubt. My older son has a bad rash, suddenly told me this morning in spite of me asking him questions about being bitten by anything before that he wakes up covered in bugs.

So I investigated his room (usually a no go zone as he's a teen) and yep, there they were. Tiny cockroach like things. No doubt about it.

I've got pest control coming round on Wednesday, cleaning and clearing upper rooms as we speak but for added security, I'd like to 'bag' the mattresses. I know it can be particularly difficult to get rid of bed bugs from mattresses so I'd rather just place them in plastic covers for a year or two. I can't afford to replace them all. Obviously I will expect to steam and hoover them more frequently than I have done in the past.

Most mattress covers are fitted i.e. 3 sided only. I'd like something that encloses the mattress and is preferably zippable and not made of shiny type plastic. I don't want to buy polythene and make each mattress into a sweat room.

Any ideas where I can buy zippable plastic mattress covers?

Hopefully by tomorrow I will have lost the constant feeling of wanting to throw up lol.

This may not be what happens all the time, but I'm actually replacing our bed frame and mattress tomorrow, as 1 whole year on from bed bugs, the mattress covers have done nothing to stop them completely (obviously we had pest control out aswell!).

I wish we'd just paid to replace the bed and mattress with a basic one in the first place, until we knew the problem was gone before getting a better bed again.

I only see maybe 2 a week now, but enough is enough after a year!

Even after having the whole rooms treated, they were still living in the bed frame, walls, carpet etc and it was some months of trying to keep on top of the problem that we really started to see a difference in numbers.

Good luck, I wouldn't wish bed bugs on anybody!!
  • We bought some cotton allergy covers from www.healthy-house.co.uk might be worth a try. Decent breathable ones aren't cheap

You may have to get rid of old carpets and soft furnishings
  • Yes, there's no way of telling where they are coming from. I'm hoping that they did come from this house and that pest control will get rid.., but also know that may not happen.

I'm hoping they are not an import from our Eastern European neighbours. Because we had problems with them recently (thought they were ok until then), the police were called and went into their house and said that they were sleeping two or three to a room and they weren't very clean. So praying that the bugs don't come from there.

Saw a Sarah Beeney programme some months ago about a householder with bed bug problems. They eventually discovered they probably came from next door. Both houses had to be treated to get rid.

(Everything that isn't tidying, cleaning and putting away is crossed).

A friend of mine got bedbugs living in London and the exterminator told her that the seats on the old trains on the Central Line are infested with them so never to sit down on the tube!

I can't offer you any suggestions but just wanted to say I really hope you get it sorted, it sounds horrendous and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

This story was debunked at the time as a PR job by rentokil (see discussion here: http://www.badscience.net/2010/03/rentokil/). No trains or buses were inspected as part of the "research".

That's not to say bedbugs are not a problem (I gather they are hard to get rid of), but I would take that particular scare story with a pinch of salt...

If you think the bed bugs are coming from next door it might be worth contacting Environmental Health.

This wasn't in 2010 it was quite recently and I am only repeating the words of an exterminator (I.e. an expert) - I didn't say 'it is a fact that there are bed bugs on the tube' but rather 'the exterminator told her there are bed bugs on the tube' :)
