What are you going to be printing, as that will determine what printer you need.

If just letters then a cheap mono laser is perfect, I bought the Dell 1130 mono laser from Ebuyer about 12 months ago for £32 and I am still using the starter toner. The starter toner does about 700 pages based on 5% coverage, ie a letter. So if printing graphics or similar then it will use more toner. Yes toner cartridges are more than the actual printer, about £50 - £70, depending if you get the 1500 or 2500 (pages) toner cartridge, yes more expensive than printer, but compare the price to original ink for inkjet Epson T0711 black ink at about £9 with 240 page yield, so 6 cartridges at £9 (1500 pages) = £54 or 10 cartridges (2500 pages) for £90

I have since bought the Dell 1250c colour LED printer from Amazon for £55, nice clean crisp prints from it. And full set of original toner is about £150 or even more, so yes pricey. But the compatibles are about £40 -
£50 and from what i have heard, and very good quality.

Advantage of laser is you can print a few letters off and leave printer alone for a month or two, come back and print of a few more with no problem. Whereas with an inkjet, if you left it alone for a cpl of months and tried to use it, then more than likely you would have to run printer diagnostics to clean the head, which uses up ink, so a 240 yield cartridge ends up being 150 pages.

    Thank you very much!

I have bought the same one (imitation being the best form of flattery), because what you said sounded exactly the same as I need. I will buy compatibles too, as soon as I have checked it out. It was £72 on Amazon (ebuyer were cheaper but out of stock), but I can live with that.

Thank you also to everyone who helped!

With Amazon, i place the printer in my basket and just kept viewing it once or twice a day, as the prices on there go up and down all the time, so when it hit £55 i bought it.

Also with the dell 1250c, if you do print a lot of letter's, you can just use the black toner.

Oh dear! Well, I was getting fed up of thinking about it! But it is a good idea and I should do that next time.

And yes, I will just use the black toner most of the time as you suggest, but at least we have the colour for if we need it.

Many thanks to all who helped! WB

  • Update on this - I love the Dell laser printer. Does all I need of it, without any hassle. Wish I had one years ago, but I expect they were too expensive back then. Even turning the paper over by hand is not really too much of a chore, because can do a whole block at once.
