If there is an electronic programme selector a plug in timer won't work, as the dishwasher needs power before a programme can be selected. A plug in timer would just leave the machine on standby but woudn't be able to actually then select/run a wash cycle.

The plug in timer might work though if the programme selector is a mechanical dial - not sure if this is the case with the OP's dishwasher though.

I don't understand - I don't know what sort of programme my dishwasher has, it isn't a dial, it's got a couple of buttons. If I press the on switch with the door open, turn off the power, close the door and turn the power back on - the machine starts a washing cycle.

Wouldn't a plug-in timer work in the same manner?

Similar to mine, it seems to remember the program set and restarts. However that probably won't work if the power is turned off at the switch rather than the on/off button on the front. That is what a time switch would do, totally disconnect power.

By power off do you mean the power at the mains switch or the on/off on the front of the dishwasher?

Yes, this is the same as ours, the on/off is on the inside top of the door (it's built-in), close the door and it starts.

so what you really need is a timer that closes the door, dragon's den anyone ?
