Drinks in the hold

Options
Tomorrow I've off to Iceland and I'm hoping to pack in a bottle of Robinsons squash (non fizzy), to drink whilst in the hotel room or whilst we're out on the day trips. However I've been checking whether it will be alright in the hold and I'm slightly concerned whether it will freeze or burst whilst in the hold on the aircraft. Can anyone tell me if it'll be alright in the hold or not as I certainly don't want it leaking or bursting at 30,000ft!

    You will have no problem.

Modern aircraft holds are pressurised and if animals can survive a trip in the belly of an aircraft, a bottle of Robinson's squash should get to your destination unscathed.

What I do with any liquids in my hold luggage is to place the containers in sealable polythene bags just in case they do leak due to a faulty container top or poor handling.

Before someone beats me to it - I know that Iceland sells squash - but I am sure you are not referring to the High Street food store!:)
  • Thanks! Would a few plastic bags wrapped around the bottle be sensible just to ensure nothing leaks?

If weight is not an issue, could you transfer the liquid into a more secure container such as a metal flask?

Maybe overkill, but you could also use the flask for hot drinks on your trip as well - but other than that, placing the bottle in a poythene bag and careful packing should suffice.
  • Good idea about the flask. I need to take a flask so shall I just put the undiluted squash into the flask and then it should be alright? Thanks for all your help!

Only trouble with a metal flask is that it will show up on the xray and they might decide to open your case to have a look.
Rational judgement, now, at this very moment.

  • Even when it is in the hold? If that is the case I'll just have to hope they don't.

I always pack a few bottles of Red wine when going on a cruise. Tape around the cap and wrap them in bubble wrap.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

All metal items will show up on an Xray and you would expect trained staff to recognise a suspicious item.

How many of us bring back metal gifts or other items from our trips without problems?

Have a look at post #3 on here.

Don't worry OP - your case will be fine and enjoy your trip to Iceland - one place that is on my list of 'to do's'!
