smallish scrape allianze want to write it off

I was not in my car when a woman to her credit knocked on my door apologising for hitting my 99 ford focus. Its value is seemingly deemed less than the repair and they (her insurers allianz)want to write it off call coming tomorrow.

a) I just insured it for 270 quid and paid the MOT and full service of 180.
b) its a great runner and I know the car is good for me for another year at least - also not ong had new exhaust system..
c) I wont be sure to replace like for like for what they will want to give.

Is there an option where I can decline the write off but get something for the inconvenience of it all and the mess to the side of my car.

What if I can get it looking acceptable with some T cut ? why should this car be allowed to get written off so easily.

LIKE WIPLASH INSURERS ARE JUST PAYING OUT INSTEAD OF DOING THE ADMIN AND FIGHTING THE LEGAL EXCEPT IN THIS CASE I HAVE THE REVERSE ISSUE THEY ARE CHOOSING THE EASY ROUTE AND PAYING ME- the obvious issue is the low valuation wont cover a replacement vehicle.

Can anyone shed some light on this ? So in this case I am completely in the clear they accept liability and yet my car is taken from me or I have to just accept the damage. So the outcome is

a) do nothing and get no money
b) accept my car is a write off and get a low cash offer less than the true value based upon a TRUE market value of a car with a years MOT. i.e. not able to buy like for like.

Car insurance and insurers = scam. They are no better than the uninsured and the fake whiplashers that make our lives hell

It would probably be best to wait an see what Allianz offer you before you start slating them.

The chances they will say the car is uneconomical to repair, offer you the value of the car less the salvage value and allow you to keep the car.

Chances are you will have between £100 and £200 in your pocket and keep the car with a scrap which you're saying would be acceptable.

To repair the car to how most people would find acceptable could cost twice the value of the car once all the costs are factored in. Which considering you've slatted them for wasting money would not be sensible when they can write the car off, allow you to retain the car and have some money in your pocket

I have only been offered the option of writing it off so far pending a valuation of such
I'm yet to come across a decent insurance company yet still not sure where I'm slating them yet ? Still you got your rise. I will be when it comes through :) but seriously no I'm not happy bout it.

For them they will look at it like a sum but for me it isn't never will be. But I guarantee you I won't get my outlay on my insurance and garage fees included in any valuation. But like you say let's wait give then the benefit of the doubt. Bless them

Plenty of people make a profit after having a non fault accident.

Small dent? You keep the car and thet give you a few hundred £. Sort teh dent for £100 and have a nice meal/holiday?

In any case you want to highlight the reasons why you think your car was better than the average value for its age, as this will define the number they start from.

You can negotiate to receive the value of the car and then buy it back as salvage.

One case where this happened to me they offered £650. After I collected some adverts of cars for sale and pointed out mine had had some of the typical jobs needed on a car that age already done, the offer was improved to £850, and I bought it back as salvage for £68. With secondhand parts from a scrapyard and 2 or 3 hours of the repair bloke round the corner hitting it with a couple of hammers I spent about £150 on repairs to a lower standard, like having a front wing of a different colour.

But note that some insurers do not want to insure a car which has been the subject of a write-off, so you need to discuss with your insurers whether they will still agree to insure it afterwards.

If not, then try to negotiate a cash settlement in lieu of repair, without it actually being defined as a write-off. This has happened with my current car, where the estimate from their repairer was just over £1000, but after some discussion I accepted £650, which the other party insurer paid anyway eventually, no write off, and keep the car and arrange repairs myself.

It did take quite a bit of discussion, as for a while someone made a mistake and it was recorded as written off, and I was speaking to people waffling about trying to get these old cars off the road as they are unsafe. That sorted itself out when I went to the complaints part of customer relations and pointed out the car had just passed a new MOT, since the accident and without any repairs, so perhaps the people calling a car they hadn't seen unsafe didn't know what they were talking about.

Be calm and don't let them railroad you. Until they pay out a settlement you agree with it's still your car.

With it being her insurers dealing with it, its not likely to be taken off you. What they are saying is that the cost of repairs will make it uneconomical to repair. They are likely to offer you a cash amount in lieu of repairs.

Chances are you will keep the car, get some cash and t-cut the scrape.

I doubt it is going to be the 'con' you expect.

Thanks rs And redux makes me feel a bit better if this is the case.I was curious why they were pressing a replacement car over and over multiple calls! Different people ?

What is the poll all about? Not relevant to this case at all.

I haven't experienced it myself, but there seems to be rumours of separate firms that offer to handle claims for people, and part of it involves hire cars which are presumably overpriced.

Or are these from your insurer?

Sometimes it seems that not all their departments are in contact with each other, so the people calling you may not know if you are still driving about.

If the car is written-off, and the insurance company pay the owner the value of the car, then the car becomes the property of the insurance company, doesn't it?
