broardband in hull

My daughter is at hull university in a house share with 5 others before my daughter actually moved in one of her housemates signed them up for internet in what seems to be a lousy deal whereby they all pay £6 a month but they have so much restrictions on times when they can use the internet that the only time she can skpe or download anything is after midnight now I know that Hull is a bit backward when it comes to internet but does anybody know of a good deal in the area.

The only deals will be with Karoo, they have the monopoly.

Kingston Telecom are the only telecom provider in the Hull area and only allow their own broadband on their system.

For £36 pm it looks as though they have the Pro2 offering at £35.75 pm
    Pro 2

The most comprehensive KC broadband service.
    Monthly usage
    300GB

    What you get

    • Unlimited overnight usage
    • 300GB monthly usage
    • 50MB personal webspace
    • Free Static IP
    • 10 Karoo mailboxes
    • Free email anti-virus
    • Free wireless router 6
    • Free technical support

It sounds like somebody in the house is hogging the 300GB allowance. Only leaving the unlimited after midnight for others to use

What is 'basic' internet use? Anything using video (streaming, downloading, video Skype) will chew through bandwidth.
6 students will get through a lot, it doesn't matter what she uses alone.
I'm not clear if that prices includes line rental, I suspect not.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • I was thinking along the lines of she is paying a 6th of the bill witch gives her 50gb would that say give her a i hour skype? or 20 minutes and downloading a few tunes? I have no idea of what 50gb means all i know is that some of her housemates are playing wi games online at all hours of the day and she is being told she can only skype or download after midnight which to me does not sound fair so i am looking for a clue as to what she should be getting for her money if at the end of the day i end up paying for a dongle so be it

50GB a month is enough for a moderately heavy user, but not a very heavy user. If others are hammering the connection in the restricted hours then it's a matter for them to sort out between themselves, no-one else can police it.

Well there are other options in Hull, a quick google search would have brought up SureBroadband

    www.surebroadband.net

I have used them for over a year now (paid annually and installation was free)

You have two options, 30gb limit £15 a month or unlimited £22.50 a month. The only sticking point is the £95 installation fee, which can be cheaper or free depending on the deals offered. All that happens is that they go onto your roof, attach a nano to a suitable place, run a cable and you have broadband. I will say though that some areas arent covered.

The other advantage is that the support is pretty good and helpful.

Oh and one other thing, you dont need to have a landline fitted, its satellite broadband

she is being told she can only Skype or download after midnight

Sounds very much like she is being given the very short end of the wedge.

If they are gamers they want the bandwidth for that which is why they wouldn't be keen on Skype. Then the fact they say its OK after midnight means that they must also be downloading stuff during the day and they don't want the Skype to eat into that allowance.

Skype isn't too data hungry, its very lean if you only use the voice aspect of it, using video will obviously increase the usage greatly.

TBH I would tell the other residents that if she doesn't get the share of the daytime allowance that she is paying for then she doesn't pay. The other residents need to sort out their heavy downloaders first to give people a fair share of what they are paying for.
