Dimplex Opti Myst

I have just returned one of these fires to the store and after a lengthy discussion they finally agreed it was not fit for the purpose. I.e. I cannot have the fire turned on because of the massive amount of condensation it creates.
This is just using it as a feature not even having the fan heater turned on!!! Every window in our house runs with condensation after we've had it on for a few hours. When we have an evening where we don't use it, the windows remain dry.
The Optimyst fires look great and at around £700 aren't cheap but I was prepared to pay that for a nice feature. However I don't have time to go round wiping all the double glazed windows dry every morning and making sure the water doesn't run down onto the wooden window sills.
When you think about it (and we didnt:(:rotfl:) the water vapour has to go somewhere. You have to use filtered water .... Which they made very clear in store and it uses a whole container every evening. That's about 2 pints.
If you look at these fires in use in store you won't notice any condensation because they are in huge buildings and I imagine this is a similar environment to where Dimplex test their fires. I do think this is something Dimplex need to address though because most of us don't live in workshops or hangars.0 -
I have one of these within my Fireplace, it is on for 5 - 8 hours per night without a single drop of condensation in the small room.
One thing to be aware of is the warranty, I bought my first one off the web, it packed up at 8 months and I then found out that the place I bought it from near Manchester shouldn't have been selling it online as they are Showroom only units, even Dimplex confimred this when I spoke wiuth them. The engineer would only call from Dimplex once the retailer, in this case an online retailer, had viisted my home to idnetify the issue. As I was 100 miles away from the purchase address the guy had no interest in calling out, I eventually posted the unit back at a cost of £64 return!
After 20 months it packed up again, I went to my local Fireplace store and found out if I had bought it from them it would have had a three year warranty! Granted it was a bit more than the web price so I sold the old one for spares on e-bay and bought a newer, slimmer model from the Fireplace store.
I have a certificate of three years warranty and if I have an issue, the guy calls out from the shop 8 miles away!
I love the Opti-Myst effect, and would definilty reccomend buying one - just dont buy it from an online reatiler whatever you do, its not worth the upfront saving!0 -
My parents brought one of these units three years ago. They have followed the cleaning and maintenance of it to the letter, I know because it has been me that has done it!
We have had nothing but trouble with it. Every year, in the summer months (as the instructions state) we hibernate the fireplace due to a lack of use.
Every year after restarting it, we have had issues with it. The issues are around the electronic unit that vibrates and makes the 'smoke' on the first year we were told that the unit was no longer in its warranty and we were made to purchase another unit. Every year from then we have had the same unit. Dimplex are sick and tired of me hassling them but until they change the whole fire over for something else, I'm going to carry on hassling them.
Verdict: over priced for a novelty that has faults
Is may be an isolated unit but I would never purchase or reccommend optimyst to anyone.1 -
Purchased an Dimplex MFD20 Opti Myst unit in November 2013, for £549.99, the biggest waste of money ever. Since purchase it has had numerous transducers, two new fans and two new power units. Keeping the fire working has cost me upwards of £500. I should have dumped it long ago but my wife likes the fire effect.1

I have bought two of these fires I foolishly thought the first one was a lemon as there were so many good reviews But to my horror the second one lasted the same amount of time. All of the good reviews were from people who have not had the fire long.
This product is undoubtedly the worst thing I have ever bought. It does not work No matter how much you clean it or use filtered water, This company are getting away with murder.
Complete waste of money a disgraceful product.1 -
What are the body of these made of? I can't find it anywhere online - my local fireplace showroom said they were made of MDF. I'm not sure whether to go for one of these fires or push the boat out a bit and get a Gazco Stockton which are definitely made of cast iron0

I have to agree with most of the reviews, these Dimplex opti myst fires are a disgrace and are definitely not fit for purpose. I have two of them, neither have lasted for anything like a years worth of use, both failed. Basically these things are£400 worth of scrap.
Best advice anyone can give is to stay well clear of anything this company produces, it's all low quality, zero reliability, garbage.0 -
Hello I have just read your question about Opti myst fires so possibly you have had a lot of answers by now but I have just joined today.
Dimplex make the Opti-mist unit which is just a long rectangular box with electrical controls, log effect top, and lights inside and sell it to lots of companies who build a firesuite around it. So you will find it in MDF, Wooden, Brick fireplaces or firesuites or in cast iron stoves all with a dimplex Opti-myst unit which is the fire part. I hope this helps you.

Hello
Have you any advice about why the lights keep cutting out They are all working and plugged in correctly . The fan and heater work perfectly. The only info. Dimplex give is to call for an engineer on their help pages. Have just bought this fantastic cream and brick firesuite from Gumtree with no sign of use just looks perfect. I have looked up for spare parts - horrendous prices. I see that the transducer seems to work the Opti-myst function.0
