I saw some in a show room last week. The flame looked really good but was very small, not really a 'roaring fire' if you know what I mean. I also saw a lot of LED ones that basically had video screens built into the fire and you could choose the type of fire that 'played'. In the end I decided they werent amazing enough to justify the extra money and went for the traditional ribbon style instead. I would definitely recommend finding somewhere you can look at the fires in real life before deciding to spend out on one.0

I'd agree that whilst it does look very good, it is more of a dying fire effect than a roaring hot fire look. The novel part is the smoke effect which comes from a water mist. To be fair it might be possible to turn them up - I imagine the 10 or so that are in the showroom I saw them in would be rather hot if they were doing anything other than low tick over so maybe they can be more dramatic. Definitely worth a look.Adventure before Dementia!0

My brother has an Opti Myst fire. I don't like it. The "smoke" just isn't realistic.
I have this one

It doesn't have a smoke effect but looks far more realistic than my brothers. It's cheaper too !0 -
The OptiMyst makes (imitation) smoke, which no other electric fire can. So it looks realistic in that respect. However, I think the back projected fires (most of the others in other words) are getting more realistic. If you go for OptiMyst, bear in mind that it needs filtered water, and needs refilling often.0

Have you had a look at the valor dimension range. These are holographic and give a depth to the fire of about 10-12'' , but are only 3'' depth for the showroom only models, 6'' depth for the internet models.
well worth a look.0 -
Morning all
Thanks for your responses and suggestions, looking at the other options now as I came across a review online from someone who has a Optimyst fire and finds it causes condensation on their windows.0 -
I bought an Optimyst fire two years ago because I loved the "smoke" effect. When it was just out of guarantee, the fire failed - no bulbs would light up and no steam was produced. Dimplex washed their hands of it because of the expired guarantee but I made such a fuss that they sent an engineer, who spent hours but could not find the fault. In the end he replaced every working part (only the basic frame remained), and it worked for several months. Then it stopped producing steam - it would cost me £189.00 to have the fire "put right", no matter what had to be replaced. I now use it without "smoke" (the very reason I bought it) because I cannot afford that money - a very miserable looking fire without the "smoke". It has been a nightmare - and an expensive one at that! in 2 years I have had 6 months of fully functioning use. Incidentally, the first sump needed to be filled almost daily whist the second once every 2 weeks. Dimplex had no explanation for this!0

Very true. We have recently bought one and while it does look really good we have to fill it every single evening with filtered water. It must be filtered ..... Ordinary water makes it smell.0 -
We have an Optimist , bought 3 years ago. Works just fine on tap water if you wash out the reservoir monthly during heating season. You can adjust the smoke effect up or down so providing you have it so that it is not belting out smoke no dampness problem .You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I've got an Optimyst and use filtered water, not had any problem with condensation and would buy another one if I needed a new fire0
