Yeah I'll have to give that a go too - changed the name of both to "Workgroup" but no joy yet.

On a different topic, I've been given 30 days McAfee security - should I ditch this now and install avast and zonealarm instead?

    Blackadder: Yes it is.
    Baldrick: Hmm... that's cunning.

If all else fails, try following the method given in this page by a Microsoft networking expert. It creates a direct connection to the drive or folder of your choice.

To directly connect two computers like that would require a Crossover cable, not a standard ethernet.

The tutorials should show you how to make a simple workgroup to share the files.

Your right mate, Sorry you need a Crossover cable to connect 2 together not the standard ethernet cable. They all look the same :)

Have you set up any shares on these PC's? Right click on the hard drive directories and select Sharing and Security. If you do it right, you end up with a little hand under the directory, holding it.
I've shared the folder I want to be shared, that's sitting on my desktop on the XP laptop and it does have a hand under it.

Vista desktop still doesn't see the XP laptop though even though I've enabled sharing on them both, named both networks the same (Workgroup) and have enabled sharing. When I click view workgroup computers I only see the PC name that I'm working on, not the other one.

I did mention that the desktop is connected to the router via the ethernet cable as it's not wireless - would this affect it I wonder - may be worth getting hold of a wireless card and trying

Does the XP laptop "see" any shared folders on the Vista one?

The issue is likely to be a firewall, try switching them all off, for better security temporarily unplug the router from the Internet/phone line, the LAN should still work.

    Update Edit:-
If you're still unable to solve it, seems that you are not alone, have a look at these two forums:-

where a solution is offered in the penultimate post.

For the XP machine to appear in the network map on the Vista machine, install LLTD Responder on the XP machine.

Also, follow carefully File and Printer Sharing in Windows Vista.

Again, firewalls! If you are running any third party firewalls, disable them temporarily to see if that's the problem.

Thanks again - the Microsoft guide proved informative and from my XP laptop I can now see the desktop, though from my vista desktop I still can't see the xp laptop.

Tried sharing a folder on my desktop so I can send files over from laptop -> desktop but it says access denied :o :wall:

There's a usenet group for Vista sharing, in particular this Access denied thread might help.
