Hey
I've got my new dell pc today
but have stored all the files on my laptop after my old desktop died. I've got about 5GB to transfer across but how do I set up a way to do it via m'router?
I've got my laptop connected to router wirelessly and the new pc is connected directly to the router via the ethernet port.
I can't work out how to do it so would appreciate any advice or if someone knows of a guide on the internet somewhere that I've not been able to find

Blackadder: Baldrick, I have a very, very, very cunning plan.

Blackadder: Yes it is.
Baldrick: Hmm... that's cunning.

OK I've tried the steps in the other articles and set up my printer for sharing, but I still can't view the other machine from network places on my laptop or desktop...
By the way, the new desktop is running vista if that mattersBlackadder: Baldrick, I have a very, very, very cunning plan.

Stick your ethernet cable from your router into the old laptop and the other end into the new one and transfer it across that way.0

To directly connect two computers like that would require a Crossover cable, not a standard ethernet.
The tutorials should show you how to make a simple workgroup to share the files.0 -
Make sure both machines are in the same workgroup (XP's is MSHOME and Vista's is WORKGROUP by default). To change it in XP, right-click My Computer - Properties - Computer Name tab - Change. Should be similar steps for Vista. Run Network Setup Wizard on both computers. In XP's My Network Places, click View workgroup computers and you should see both computers. Also check for firewalls blocking access.0

I've tried direct connection via ethernet sockets but still nothing came up on either computer under "My Computer" or "Network"
this screenshot is on my new desktop which is "Home-PC"
