Does your employer dictate when you have to take your holidays?

As per the subject...or do they indeed restrict when you can take your hols in any other way/set condition? How big is the business you work for?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Small care home, 8 staff, no holidays at all over Christmas/New Year, only 1 full time person or two 20 hours off at a time the rest of the year. The weeks anyone are desperate for are negotiated in a team meeting so it's all open to discussion, the rest fit in as and when. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

They state when we can't take holidays which are busy periods eg whole of december(allowed xmas day and I think boxing day off) and easter time, if we want to book holiday for them periods it goes to the store manager and there needs to be a decent reason for the time off, people of certain faiths are allowed to book time off at certain periods when busy.
I work for a national company.
It doesn't bother me that you cant take holidays off in december.0 -
Yes, because I'm in education. And people can b!tch about teacher's holidays all they like, but I'm the one that has to pay the blinkin' price hikes in summer holidays.
Then find my hotel is full of screaming, hyper kids - which I am trying to get AWAY from on holiday!!!

7 in our team; we just work around each other so the work is covered. I tend to let those with kids have halfterm/Christmas etc even though DH is a teacher. We don't go away on holidays so really it's a moot point; if we were keen travellers, I'd probably be more bothered about trying to get a share of school holiday time."Save £12k in 2019" #120 - £100,699.57/£100,0000

No. In 28 years at my current place of employment I've never had a holiday request turned down.

Sorry to say but we all know in education you have set holidays so you do not take the job if you don't want them set out like that.0 -
If we want time off between Christmas and New Year we have to keep the leave back for it, so at the start of each year I deduct those days from everyone's leave entitlement - I prepare the leave booking sheets. Then people can 'unbook' them if they intend to come in then, because most people don't.
Small charity, 15 employees.
we're also restricted by teams and seniority, eg generally we try to have only one person from each team off at once, and only one manager at a time. We can negotiate for an odd day off if someone else is off for a week, but that's what we aim for.
I only do a 4 day week, so I can be asked in advance to come in on my 'day off' if there's a problem, and get the time back in a different week. Doesn't often happen.
An employer CAN dictate exactly when all holidays are taken. Used to be quite common in factories that there would be set closure times. Childcare facilities (nurseries and afterschool holiday playschemes) may also have set closure periods, when I ran an afterschool club we never opened between Christmas and New Year and I had staff take leave then: it wasn't economic to pay staff to come in for the small numbers of children involved.Signature removed for peace of mind0
