I had been using the toolbar for years, without any issues, until a few weeks ago.
There may well have been an update of some sort a few weeks ago, and it may be this that is causing the problems.
Windows can behave exactly the same. Working perfectly and allowing all of your installed programs to also work, then a single automatic update can totally screw it up.0 -
check tools internet options connections, and lan settings, you shouldn't have dial a connection or any proxies set.
you say the slowness happens when you aren't using the toolbar "(or an open Google page)", so one option is to reset IE to defaults, under tools, internet options, advanced.
instructions for hijackthis and a full scan with malwarebytes (which may also be a good idea if you haven't done it) are here

you don't need the toolbar to use google, just set your homepage to google. https://www.google.co.uk/webhp?complete=0!!

There shouldn't be any need for a full scan with Malwarebytes - which could potentially take hours - the quick scan should initially suffice.

With IE9 and Google as default search engine just type your search term in the address bar on a new tab - does exactly what the Google toolbar does.604!0

I think I might have resolved the issue (for now at least). I was trying to explore the option of using a different toolbar. So I had a look at Ask. I discovered I had it already installed. It dawned on me that they might be conflicting so I uninstalled it and Google toolbar, rebooted and lo and behold it now appears to be working normally.
I use the toolbar for convenience. It is good to be able to highlight text on the screen and have it appear in the search box, as well as having a spellchecker a click away and being able to search highlighted words in the text, just by clicking on the word on the toolbar. Autofill is quite handy as well.
Anyway, thank you and everybody else for your help; it has been invaluable. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
there's always a cost to toolbars - privacy, stability, performance.!!
