Faulty Argos Sofa

Hello,

I'm hoping someone may be able to help me with some advise on how to resolve a problem with my sofa- it is my first post so please be gentle!

I bought a sofa from Argos just under 4 months ago. They have in the last few weeks developed big dents where we sit making them become very unsightly and uncomfortable (I'm embarrassed when we have guests!). The sofas now look about 3 years old and in my opinion are not fit for purpose. It is probably worth mentioning we did only pay £500 and yes I know you get what you pay for and we have certainly learnt our lesson!

As they are just under 4 months old, I thought I'd have no issue with getting a refund from Argos. I called up today and was advised they would need to send someone out to come and look at the fault and determine if it is a manufacturer fault. I asked what would happen after this and she explained if they were deemed to be faulty then I would be offered a repair (if possible) or if not an exchange. I explained I was not happy with this as have lost all faith in Argos Sofas and wanted a refund. She explained this is not their policy and would not be possible.

I am really unhappy about this as the sofa is no use to us any more, probably worth noting neither of us are obese and both work full time so are not sitting on the sofa 24 hours a day!

Also read somewhere about a Chargeback option as I paid on credit card?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am tearing my hour out and very stressed now!

Many Thanks

    Hello

I learned a similar lesson buying sofas from Tesco - buy cheap, buy twice!

In fairness, Tesco were very good; my issue was that the fabric was splitting on one sofa, and the cushions were collapsing on the other. As Argos have suggested to you, they did send out an assessor/workman who attempted some repairs. These were unsuccessful and, after the second call to Tesco, was sent out again.

He checked the sofas again and wrote a report to say that the repair did not hold and that he recommended refund/replacement.

Tesco arranged to collect the sofas and refunded my money.

I guess something similar will happen with yours - it's just that the process takes a couple of weeks to complete, so bear with them as they have to follow due process.

If, after your repair, you are still not satisfied and you reach a deadlock over a refund/replacement, you can engage the furniture ombudsman.

Hope that helps, and good luck - as I say, it's not a quick process and you may not get the resolution you want, but rest assured that there is an independent 3rd party who you can turn to for assistance.
  • Thanks for your reply. I think you could be right. Personally I think the problem is the poor quality of cushions, so I imagine the only 'repair' they could offer would be to replace when of course it would happen again which I guess at this point I would get them out again.

I am probably more frustrated as I've seen a lovely John Lewis 3 and 2 piece sofa for £1,100 at our local clearance shop which no doubt will be sold by then!

Damn Argos.... certainly will not buy from there again!

Is the sofa foam filled or fibre?

If it's fibre filled it needs plumping a few times a day (preferably every time someone gets up) or they go flat very quickly.

I bought a new sofa a few weeks ago and had to pay extra to get a foam filled one to stop it from happening although the back is still fibre filled and I plump it three times a day and the one unused seat is already noticeably plumper than the used ones and we've only had it a month.

The guy in DFS (not where I bought it but we looked there) told us that they plump fibre filled sofas every time a customer has sat on and spend a lot of the day going around plumping every sofa in the showroom. He said they even swap the positions of the cushions once a week to keep the wear even.

It may not be that you have a faulty sofa but a high maintenance one that hasn't been kept properly plumped.
