Advice sought re overnight electricity consumption

  • OP back on.Used 5kwh overnight:j

Set my two 500W pir security lights to minimum time on and minimum dawn to dusk setting.
Also have an Electric Delonghi Oil Heater which comes on for an hour and a half only each morning in a dressing room/bedroom(problem radiator) which I switched off as well.

Our kitchen has gch underfloor heating connected to a thermostat in the kitchen and I remember they installed a pump under the kitchen floor.I'm wondering even when the heating is off overnight for the gch radiators as it's on a timer setting......could the thermostat be kicking in o/n for the underfloor heating thus kicking the pump into life ?

Have tweaked the thermostat down anyway and will see what effect that has overnight tonight.

Maybe I'm being thick but if you have panels are they not reducing your energy use during daylight hours?

Is this not the case then?

I'm genuinely interested; many properties hereabouts have had them fitted lately.

wywth is correct about the amount of properties with E7 meters, theres stacks of them around, some sizeable towns like Retford and Worksop and Peterbrough, they could even be in the majority. Macman is also correct about them knowingly being aware of them, they dont understand the complex bills with their tier one and two and kwhrs, its all meaningless to them and I would say its extremely rare indeed to find a householder who knows that the break even point is approx 30% night use. This is something that the suppliers should be automatically informing the users to get off this eco7 tariff quickly, or even to be compensating them for their complete lack of action

I only started being anal about my consumption as I took a strong interest once we had our solar panels installed in February.
We probably have been averaging 10kwh daily from March till mid September.

No idea what we were using before.....I imagine the solar panels have been masking my normal consumption from spring till late summer.

Now that the nights are drawing in up here the solar panels are starting to hibernate :)

I am lucky to have a big house but something still nags at me that 10kwh o/n when all asleep is not right.
Yesterday we were 11kwh between 0800 and 2200 and 10kwh between 2200 and 0800 today.

See above comment about turning everything off.
    DO IT!
Or at least look to see if it's flashing constantly all the time.

would be a quick and easy way to see what's going on and avoid staring at the meter for ages.

Okay I have an analogue Scottish Power meter with one large rotating dial and a tiny small dial adjacent to it.The large dial has a black indicator on it.At the moment it is rotating one revolution every 17 seconds.Beside it says....200revs/kwh

Anyone give me the idiots Maths guide for this please ?

So 200 revs (1kWh) will take about 57 mins (6,400 seconds). You are using near enough 1kWh per hour.

    Typo, I think. :)

    3400 seconds.
But yes, about 1kWh/h - or a power of 1kW.

    3600 (60s*60) / 200 = 18 seconds.
So, once every 18 seconds is a kilowatt.
    Half this (9s) , and it's 2kW.
    Double, and it's .5kW (500W).

So by that calculation...I'm using the same during the day as I am thro the night.
I was off work today as nightshift last night. No tv's on today during the day so does a big tv on standby use as much electricity as when on ?

just done a useage check on my Panasonic 42 inch plasma, rated at 350w. I switched everything off and using my accurate ( I presume ) smart meter monitor the tv was using 0.24kwhr or 2. 35 pence and hour . on standby it dropped to 0.02 kwhr or 0.22 pence an hour.
the only thing electrical on in the house was the TV and the smart meter monitor and a led from a 4 way socket. so it looks like on standby its using approx a fifth of a penny an hour
my monitor is saying my BG tariff is on 9.77 pence a unit so I must now be on the tier 2 rates
