THIS makes clean holes and the sound is optional...0

you can make as much noise as you like during the day
just carry on and get it done there is nothing they can do to stop you doing your bit of drilling
the sooner its done the sooner the noise will be stopped0 -
Use an SDS drill. Won't change the noise factor but you'll get the job done in a fraction of the time.

As already said, I think speaking to them and asking when the baby sleeps is the best bet and then avoiding working during those times. It shows that you are attempting to compromise which should work in your favour.
However I don't think you should be making an issue out of it unless you are attempting to work at unreasonable hours. The baby might cry initially but it will get used to it. It does need to learn that it's not all sweetness and light, that there are unpleasant noises in this world that need to be tolerated. Explain that to them and they should understand if they are reasonable people. Otherwise say, "sod them" and just get on with it.0 -
Myself I would just do it, they'll knock if there's a problem. If they do knock, let them know how much longer you expect to be and that you're doing it as quickly as possible to minimise disruption.
I'd sooner my neighbours spent an hour drilling loudy, rather than all day drilling quietly. Gets it out the way quicker with that way.0 -
Just time the drilling to the babies crying...
If you really really care then maybe suggest you pay their entrance to the local soft play centre for a couple of hours whilst you drill, but make sure you let them know it's a one-off thing. Even that is going too far imho.0 -
Yes it's annoying have to listen to your neighbours' DIY but really if they don't like it they can always go for a walk to the park. Fresh air is good in all weathers. Then there's the library which is great to warm up after the park. Do the weekly shop. Etc etc they just need to think about it. As it is going to go on for several hours it would be polite to let them know in advance so they can arrange a trip out and if you don't mind sticking to only one day at the weekend. However if you need to get the job done then get on and do it. Agree a finish time maybe 5pm and stick to it. We all want to get on with our neighbours but we all need to get on with our lives as well. How many hours do you anticipate this work will take?0

Trying to make any work quieter will probably result in it taking longer - I agree with the others, pick a time and just do it. Reality is in your house it sounds loud, for the neighbours they know work is going on, but its not that loud really. Only time they'll really know about it is when you're drilling into the wall between you.0
