just call your supplier and ask for an exchange
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
  • with 20 years use, if its with same supplier, there should be no probs at all with a free exchange to credits.

    a) There is no indication it was with the same supplier for 20 years, it may not even be the same property

    b) many suppliers will charge for such a non-essential meter change.

    a) thats why I said "if "
    b) Brit Gas and Eon are on M.S.E. information section on prepays as suppliers who may do free exchanges.
    c) I would consider it essential that in order to get onto the cheapest tariffs and get away from the inconvenience of constantly running to the meter to check credit that its important to move away from the things

I understand that a charge of £51.06 is made by Eon for such a meter change

I think it would only be free with them if a current customer on a credit meter moved house and the new house had a PPM fitted.

If they're coming soon to fit smart meters in all our homes it may be better waiting and getting a new meter free.

British Gas are coming up to the third year of fitting smart meters in my area, (s.yorks ) so far not one prepay has been exchanged or used for smart metering. My guess is that they will be the last to switched.

E.on have recently removed this charge:

I think it came from the reset review.

MoneySupermarket have a more up to date article:

    Thank you SwanJon :)

I note the Moneysupermarket item is very recent (dated 27 Sept 2012) and may not be effective until 01-Nov-2012, when the Ofgem rules apply.

It also, as you say, states there is no charge to pay on that Eon link.
Confusingly, on that same Eon page, there is a link to a PPM booklet

    Changing to a credit meter
Changing to a credit meter is dependent on your circumstances, so please call us
    to discuss your options:
    • If you’ve lived at the property for longer than twelve months and the meter
was not fitted to recover a debt, we’ll exchange your prepayment meter if you
agree to pay by Direct Debit. However, we may require you to contribute to the
    cost of changing the meter.
    • If you’ve moved into your home recently we’ll exchange your prepayment meter
as long as you meet our credit vetting requirements. There may be a charge for
    this.
    • We won’t remove the meter if it was fitted to recover a debt, unless we
can agree an acceptable alternative payment method. Where we agree
to remove a prepayment meter we’ll arrange an appointment with you.
Please note: If we agree to exchange the meter then you may be required to
pay a security deposit. If we have to reinstall the meter at a later date, our
full costs will be chargeable to you.

By the file name, that appears to be from June 2012, so perhaps it was a very recent change and they've not updated that booklet yet?

BG are digging the road up outside at the moment to fit new pipes and i had letter to say they'd need access to the house to perhaps do the house pipes and meter but they knocked a couple of days ago and don't think that's part of the work.
I thought i'd read we were all due to change in the next couple of years.
