moving house help!

  • We chose to do it ourselves last time we moved (2011) with three of us moving the contents of a 1600 sq ft house 200 miles to a 2000+ sq ft one - it took around seven/eight trips over the course of a week (we got keys early) with goodness knows how many days of packing beforehand - and that was in the largest Luton van we could hire :o

The only reason we elected to DIY was 'cos previously we'd been charged over £4k by Bishop's Move for a similar long-distance move (from 3500 sq ft to 1600 sq ft house and TONS of stuff) but tbh with the benefit of hindsight, doing it ourselves still cost a lot as well as nearly killing us - never again, lol ;)

Some jobs are worth spending money on, and this is one of them - if your back is worth anything to you of course.

However removal companies will certainly negotiate - especially if you don't want to move on a Friday. I found mine with a combination of ratedpeople, which local and a couple of other "endorsement" websites....a Luton load (only just fit) of a 2 to a 3 bed house about 15 miles. For £250. On a Sunday. I packed myself the week before, that was hard enough work on its own!

I did it myself just a few weeks ago. Hired a Luton from a 3 bed plus garage. 5 of us moved everything and did it all in time.Never again. Professionals next time without a shadow of a doubt!

We moved out of our three bed house just 3 weeks ago and we managed it ourselves.

We spent weeks sorting and getting rid of anything we didn't need, several weeks packing, leaving only the essentials until the last minute.

We did have a heck of a lot of stuff, plus the contents of a 10ft shed containing so many tools, bikes, camping gear and about 15 big potted plants, ladders, garden furniture...

OH is big and strong and made carrying huge pieces of furniture look easy and just carried on and on...

We had his dad to help and my daughter and I did what we could. We had the most horrendous weather conditions and I won't pretend it was easy, especially when we completed as expected at noon but the vendors didn't complete until 3.30 and in order to collect a second van load of our stuff we had to use our van to move the vendors stuff that wouldn't fit in their van and take it to their new house for them!

We did 5 trips in the van in all, good job we were only moving 2 miles away!

We were absolutly exhausted and didn't sit down for a second until 10.30pm, but we did it and it only cost £70 to hire a Luton Box van with tail lift and a bit of diesel. We got free cardboard boxes from a friend and banana boxes from the supermarket and a few rolls of parcel tape. We wrapped everything breakable in newspaper that another friend gave me so no cost there either.

So it can be done without the professionals, my sister moved a few weeks before us and she managed it too.

We have booked removals for our move from a 3 bed to a 4 bed but that is because my husband is away until 2 days before we move and we have a 2 year old tasmanian devil!
