moving house help!

hi all just realised that a DIY move for our house is going to be way much, i was going to hire a luton size van plus 4 men to help. however from rough calculation it will take about 5 trips we are in a 3 bed with garage moving about 3-4 miles into a 4 bed.

i believe we will need to vacate around 12 when the completion goes through? i think i was fooling myself this was possible.

i think i may have get the professionals in ££££

someone told me about anyvan.com where removal companies bid with each other for business..

any tips on what to do... your thoughts anything please?

thanks

My father in law tried to do this with 3 of us helping....it was a disaster that led to the buyers turning up wanting to move in and we still have half a house to clear.

Just get professional movers to do it for you who will get it all out and loaded in probably a couple of hours.
  • Agh to the mere thought of anyone with a housefull of stuff trying to "move themselves".

I was just thinking back to the only "house move" I've had to date and wondering if I could have done a DIY move on that - as it was only a flatlet worth of stuff and the answer boils down I couldnt have (even for that small amount of stuff). A major reason "why not?" on that one was down to stuff needing to be carried along a corridor, down a flight of steps in the building (no lift!) and down a flight of steps outside and that was before I took into the fact of having to carry some of the stuff upstairs in the house I moved to. Those stairs in my current home are rather awkward ones to navigate too - not a "straight up and down set".

I think I was a bit naive at the time. Thankfully, not too naive to book a professional firm to do it. In hindset - those guys deserved a medal..particularly considering I had chosen to have the washing machine carried up a flight of stairs, round a corner and up a couple more steps and then put in the bathroom. As a first-time home-owner at the time those thoughts never occurred to me:o

So the access either end is one of the factors you need to bear in mind.

Agree with both the above. When you see how quickly and easily the professionals do it you will appreciate them. Always money well spent.
  • No, no, no - I know it's only a few miles down the road, but the lifting and carrying are the same as on a longer move. Advantages of using professionals - you get the benefit of guys who are as strong as oxes (sp??), and know what they're doing, there's less damage to your furniture, your walls, and your backs, and you get their insurance cover if anything does happen to get damaged.

Agh no. Yes, you should aim to be out by lunchtime. Our purchase completed at 1pm and we were told we could pick up the keys from the EA. Fortunately, we weren't moving in on the day itself as we got to the EA at 4pm to find they didn't have the keys. Seller turned up very flustered at 4:50pm - they had only just finished moving out! They were only going 2 miles from a 4-bed to a 3-bed and thought they could do it themselves.

Only viable if you have very little stuff. I did it from one flat to another when renting, by hiring a transit, but all I had was a bed, a sofa, a TV, and some clothes/kitchen items.

Every move since then has been done by the professionals.

Just phone three local removal companies and get quotes. Look for ones who are BAR members (British Association of Removers).

Seriously? None of you have moved a 3 bed house without using Pickfords or same before?

    Wow.

I've done it twice. Both times was a three bed house. Myself, my husband, my FIL and max two men (the first time, it was just 1) and we did the whole move, pack, transit and unpack in 13 hours. My FIL took all small stuff in his car, my husband and I worked just as hard as the men we hired and both times we got the whole lot in a Luton van. Granted, we were a bit shattered the next day and my MIL got full marks for taking care of the kids while we were doing this, but it cost us £400 all told and that was counting 'overtime' for the sudden tea-breaks the 'men' felt they needed. Me, I didn't stop the whole 13 hours....

I spent weeks before hand packing and stacking boxes, everything small or valuable went in the cars with a family member. The furniture was in the van covered with blankets and packed really very well.

It most certainly IS possible to move a 3 bed house DIY style.
Debt Free! Long road, but we did it

Have you had a massive clearout and sent a load of stuff to the tip or charity shop? Could you hire two Luton vans OR one van for two days, packing up two loads the day before and putting them into a storage unit (inexpensive)? Have you got the dustbin lids out of the way? If not get the professionals in, they will have an appropriate sized van and know which order to pack for efficiency and prevent damage.

  • I've moved loads of times and not ever once hired someone to do it. I even moved my brother up from his three bed house in Stevenage to East Yorkshire. Everything fitted in a 7.5 ton lorry.

I've moved a few times, and I've always done it myself, but I've always had a week or two to get things from A to B and a van to do it with.
You end up eating out of a takeaway every night, knackered, and aching, and there's always a small pile of stuff you have no idea what to do with.
    I'll hire professionals next time.

    Thats what friends are for!!
Last time we moved I got very lucky as the seller kindly gave me the keys to the double garage a few weeks before ( if was seperate from the house and a double)
Moved every item from the garden/garage over a few weeks and only hired a small VW van on the day as sold lots of stuff that would not fit in new house.
It can be done but I would still hire a removal firm
Good Luck in your new home hope you are HAPPY !!
