Ah, I might download it then. My Windows 7 doesn't seem to be genuine...

Oh wait, is that only the upgrade? Will it work if I dont have genuine Windows 7?

To answer the original question! .you PC is absolutely fine for Windows 8!

If you have bought a PC recently with Windows 7 on it , you can get it for £14.99.

If you read through the hotukdeals link I posted you will see what could euphemistically be called a 'workaround' for getting the upgrade. Might work for you but I couldn't possibly comment. ;)

As I understand it, Windows 8 is meant to be a little lighter on resources due to reduced bloat. That doesn't mean I would buy it though. ;)
  • I see MS has now started marketing how similar 8 is to 7:
    Windows 7, only better

Windows 8 is built on the rock-solid foundation of Windows 7, but it’s been improved on all fronts. You can install Windows 8 on the same hardware that powers Windows Vista and Windows 7, and you’ll love how it works on new devices, too. Windows 8 was designed with Windows 7 apps in mind, because you probably have older apps you need to use.

In addition to the new look of the Start Screen, Windows 8 incorporates the desktop that you’re familiar with. Think of the desktop as one of the many apps you can run in Windows 8. In the desktop, you’ll see all the settings, devices and features you used in Windows 7—and you can run the desktop apps you ran in Windows 7, too.

They're obviously reacting to all the criticisms of the new GUI. Having used 8 for a while on a VM it is pretty much the same as 7 once you fight your way past the Metro GUI (which I don't like at all).

There is a payware app called RetroUI aimed at commercial users who want to deploy a classic desktop for users. Will probably give it a try at $4.95. I suspect there's probably freeware ones out there (or will be soon).

For anyone still stuck with Vista, being able to get rid of it by jumping to W8 for £25 is a no-brainer.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
