Nationwide !!!! up

Opened a Loyalty Saver account a few days in my sole name and, today, a Loyalty Saver passbook duly arrived. Just one problem - the book is in two names, neither of which are mine.

Managed to trace the account holders who tell me that they received my passbook last week!!!

That is NOT good, Nationwide!!!!

Handsome compensation should be on the way to you, and the others, by now, along with a massive apology, and even more massive re-assurance that nothing like this will ever be allowed to happen again.

the same thing happened to me. I had somebody elses details printed in my book.. I do not know why they cannot key the applications and issue the passbook when you go into the branch. They insist on posting passbooks when you have not had the opportunity to add you signature with the ultra violet paper. Any one intercepting the book could insert their own signature.
  • Something similar happened to me, from a different B.S. Self and OH applied for accounts. OH's envelope came back without a passbook. Fortunately, they were both in my envelope.

I believe the guidelines state £100 minimum compensation for a DPA breach.

More likely that you were sent someone else's book. In my case I did not open the account in-branch; I did it by phone, even though it is a branch-based account.

I will check on that! I figure that Nationwide owe me money for refusing to transfer existing ISA monies into a Flexclusive ISA.

A few years ago, Barclays sent our current account statement to another person with same Surname but totally different address.

They apologised and credited our account with £10.00
They then did exactly the same thing the following month!

Fortunately, the wrong address just happened to be one of our sons. Not that Barclays would know that.
My son was surprised to see so much money in his account :D but only for a few seconds:(

We never gave a thought to compensation.
    Silly us.

This is not the first time this has happened to me! Last time it was Abbey National, the time before was Halifax! Halifax gave me £75 compensation. Abbey National paid me nothing, presumably because I was not even a customer!

A acquaintance of mine was sent a passbook by Santander which was not his - it has his surname on it but he had not opened that account. He took the passbook back to Santander who insisted he must have forgotten he opened the account. So, he withdrew all the money and closed the account.

The real account holder found out of course and Santander then wrote to the account holder offering apologies - but the letter never arrived at the account holders address it arrived at my acqaintence's address!!

Does 'the guidelines' have a source?

I understood that there was no DPA guidance on expected compensation levels for DPA breaches.

Where there has been no financial loss, and just an error on the part of an organisation, I would not necessarily expect to see any compensation.

You can still try; just don't expect to get very far with it.

I believe ses6jwg may be referring to Santander's "guidelines".

Yorkshire Bank's "guidelines" for DPA issues are £150 ... speaking from personal experience. :)
