Wireless router: cable

Hello everybody
I am looking for a wireless router, and the person I spoke to at Virgin Media recommended Netgear. As I'm on Virgin, I'm on cable, and he said I would need a different router than if I was on a normal BT landline.
Does this mean that if I change provider I will have to buy another router??
Also, does anyone have any tips on netgear routers? I went into PC world today, and there seemed to be dozens. I use my computer alot, so I'm prepared to pay a bit extra for a decent connection if a more expensive router will make that difference.
Lastly, does anyone know of the cheapest place to buy them? I will, naturally, try to buy it through Quidco or Pigsback.
THANKS!!!

you need a router only, NOT the built in modem. Any of the devices below should be OK. If you want an extended range so for example you want to sit in the garden you may want to go for the MIMO or the N-type routers. But for indoor you should be fine with a standard router. Netgear stuff is quite good, i have a netgear also, so if you get a netgear or a linksys you should be fine.

I went through a similar baffling situation on Saturday buying a Netgear ADSL router. There were loads to choose from and in the end opted for a 108MBps one with free adaptor included to enable our non-wireless enabled desktop machine to communicate with the router.
The ones for cable did seem slightly cheaper for the equivalent speed ADSL ones.
Since installing it I am very pleased with it.Hark at you going all strict0 -
Try https://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk check their prices, I have bought from in the past and found them very informative, plus their customer service was excellent ( I use linksys)
Good luckToday, my BEST is good enough.0 -
just realised that the link does not work so go to pcworld.co.uk
click on networking and then click cable router.
Also look at this link from ebuyer http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/cat/Wireless/subcat/Cable-/-DSL-Routers
a linksys router WRT54G is available for £27 delivered which is a bargain! This is quite a good workhorse of a router!0 -
Thanks everyone, some great info. I will check out those links.MF date: Dec [STRIKE]2028[/STRIKE] 2019. Overpayments in 2007=£900, 2008=£1200 2009=234000
