    Your only slightly doomed.

I would follow malamutes advice and system restore to when I could access the net. This wont cure the problem if its malware/trojans but it should allow you to get online and run a scan

Thank you, I'm going to do this now but keep logged on to this machine to keep checking for any further answers. I'm sorry to be a pain and you've all been really helpful.

It should say something like the above, if it says the bit in bold, then that proves you are on the internet, so it is probably an issue with IE if it still doesn't work

Have a look through the IE, tools, internet options tabs, and clear out temp files and reset defaults, see if it helps.

Yes it says very similar to what you've posted, and identical in respect of the packets info. It's good to know it may well be IE. I'm going to system restore to two days ago.

I did system restore, which took away a lot of the content of things I'd added (eg my old emails, documents etc). I've had to undo this restore back to the current time. I'll see what Dell say tomorrow..... I'm so wound up I won't be able to go to bed at this rate!

Dell will say restore it back to factory state. What you do after you get it, isn't really their responsibility.

Yes you would loose some of what you had installed from the last good restore point. But what about the connection problems was it back to normal?. Dell won't be much help they will probably suggest a full restore to as shipped i wish you well you could be on the phone for quite a while.

Thank you but unfortunately I can't access the internet on the laptop that is worst! I think I'm doomed......
Ah! I overlooked that crucial point. Suggest you bring up Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and look for processes using high CPU.
