I received my new Dell laptop two weeks ago. When I got back from hols this weekend i moved my files over, installed the programmes I wanted and put Avast free virus programme on. Yesterday I noticed things were running slow. This morning I was unable to get in to internet explorer though I could send and receive emails in Outlook.
It progressed to no internet access, clicked on the icon, nothing came up. Same with Tiscali help section, clicked but no response. Responses from other programmes. Therefore, moved to my older Dell laptop and reinstalled software. I had removed a number of programmes from the new laptop, just in case. I was also unable to use google. I did get a message of "can't find browser" at one stage.
Rang Tiscali, on hold although no reported problems with the service. Have emailed Dell. What on earth has happened?!

Vista or XP?
Is Mcafee still installed?
What software have you put on and taken off?
Wired or Wireless?
When you go into IE, what happens?
Does start, search cmd then ping https://www.google.com work?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
XP on both laptops.
Uninstalled McAfee and put Avast on. It asked for my license number earlier and I didn't have one, I feel something may have happened there. Was still giving me update info though.
Software on:
Microsoft Office 2000
Photoshop
Legalsounds.com
Limewire
Software off:
Corel
McAfee (annoying messages as I logged in I couldn't close down)
Wired.
When I go in to the blue e, I can click on it, egg timer comes on, then disappears and nothing happens. If I do manage to get on (not at all now) I can't go to any address and google is my homepage.0 -
Does the ping work?
Router or modem?
Is the firewall turned on in control panel security center?
Limewire
Avast should send you an email with the lic no.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Ping doesn't work. Modem. Firewall kept going on then off. Currently on. I just can't get on to the net to even try to rectify or find out what's wrong. Am I doomed? Am frightened to log off tonight from my old laptop in case i can't get back on tomorrow!0

You could remove the programmes you have installed and use the System Restore function (inbuilt into windows)to take you back to when the laptop was functioning OK
Or put the laptop back to its original configuration use the restore disks or the restore on the hidden partition.
You will then be able to determine whether its the laptop or the software you have installed that is at fault.0 -
Not saying you have an infection, but it's worth following the malware removal guide to check - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1332690

Apologies, typing it the way you wrote it does work, and it comes up with "Ping statistics" with 32 bytes of data. Then four lines of ISP info and bytes. Then statistics and info about packets. Is this what you'd expect to see?0
