is the router on an extension, if so, the speed may be improved by disconnecting the bell wire from the master socket

You can get a replacement for less than a fiver on ebay.
If the ethernet is integrated into the pc's motherboard it's more of a problem.
On the PC is there anything showing in Device Manager for 'Network adapters?'
This was my exactly my line of thinking when I first happened this thread.
The standard troubleshooting protocol is to begin by verifying the servicability (or lack thereof) of the hardware.....
......I'm assuming that you have already verified the servicability of the Ethernet cable by substituting a "Known Good" ? If not - do so as a priority.
Additionaly - keep in mind that router hardware can also fail. Once again diagnosis is simply a matter of substituting a "Known Good" (or connect a different PC to the router to verify).
Hope this helps - "Good Luck" with it.0 -
decided i would prefer to have a wired connection if possible so ordered an ethernet adapter card (D-Link DFE-530TX) & it came today.
it was a little bit fiddly, but it probably took me longer to unplug the connections from the back of the tower & move it to get access, than it did to actually fit the card & get the tower case back on again!
working straight away with no issues, so normal service resumed & mild panic/inconvenience over. thanks again for all the help0 -
