'lost' wired/ethernet connection, but wireless is working ok

  • If your wired ethernet is integrated into the motherboard it will look something like this (top left next to green mouse input) but could be in a slightly different arrangement, depending on motherboard;

    do

    ipconfig /all

it will tell you which card wireless or wired is picking up an ip address, what you've said sofar suggests the wireless is working, but wired card not

    ping -t www.google.com
ping -t your router ip address eg 192.168.x.x

    control c to quit

    will help diagnose the networking

    any 3rd party firewall installed?

i think the PC is about 5, possibly 8 years old, i have no idea on the specifics of the card.

in device manager, network adapters > ASUS 802.11g network adapter. right click > update driver, disable, uninstall, scan for hardware changes (did that yesterday), properties. in properties > general > location PCI slot 1 (PCI bus 1, device 6, function 0), 'the device is working properly'. under Driver tab > driver date 11.02.05 (i guess that's how old the PC is then!), driver version, digital signer, then options to update, roll back or uninstall.

hope that means something, gibberish to me i'm afraid :o

The above details relate to the wireless adapter. Is there also an entry for another Network Adapter? If not, anything Listed under "Other Devices" or "Unknown Devices"?
How do I add a signature?

The 802.11g is the PC's wireless card.

It will look something like this on the back of the PC:

    250

A wired ethernet pci card will look like this:

    eavy_wn0004.jpg

    Do you have both?

the wireless one is like the first picture, where the ethernet cable plugs in is as shown on the photo from Toxteth_OGrady - all the connections together on one silver plate (which i know now is the motherboard i guess!).

ipconfig/all - brought up just the 802.11g connection, confusingly (to me anyway) called 'ethernet adapter wireless network connection 2'.
ping google - loads of lines of data, reply from 74.125.132.106, bytes 32, times various, TTL49. then ping stats for 74.125.132.106. packets sent 58 received 46 lost 12 20% loss, round trip times in milli-seconds, min 110ms, max 591ms, average 320ms
ping ip address - line info first, bytes32, time various, TTL64. packets, sent 16, received 15, lost 1 6%. round trip min 0ms, max 5ms, average 1ms.

i hope i did that right, all very confusing! :)

3rd party firewall? just windows (defender?), i have got AVG anti virus free but no firewall on that.

nothing else listed as other or unknown on the device manager list & nothing else says network or adapter. there's Port (COM & LPT)>which has communications port com1 & printer port LPT1 listed under it ??

so yes it looks like wireless is connected & working, so why can't i get online? i've just tried again, my homepage has loaded first time this time which is unusual, but literally takes minutes to appear. it's so painfully slow.

thank you all again for trying to help me on this, i really do appreciate your time & suggestions (but feel like i'm a real pain in the neck :o)
  • If the wired connection is part of the motherboard backplane then it's probably faulty. Could be the socket or could be the chip. You could try to disable and then re-enable the onboard ethernet in the bios.

  • If you have a spare pci slot (inside the case where the Asus wifi card is plugged in) you could always add one of these to give you wired ethernet:

Regarding the wireless, which appears to be working, intermittently - has this wireless adapter got an aerial, and it is secure, try repositioning it and/or the router until you get no packet loss on pings to google. Changing the channel might also help.

Double check the wired connection gives a reassuring click when reseated.

post a hijackthis log - to make sure there is no proxy setting interfering with your browser

if you point me in the right direction for an idiots guide on how to do this, i'm willing to try!

thanks for the link. there are about 4 extra slots similar to the wifi card, so i presume these are 'empty'. i added a memory card to an old PC, so i don't mind getting my screwdriver out & having a go. :)

i've checked & re-checked the connections for the wired connection, all fully clicked in at the moment.

the antenna for the wifi is secure, nothing obstructing it, i'll give the direction a wiggle to see if this helps. i can't get online at all today using internet explorer, it just times out & 'unable to connect'. firefox has opened ok, just, but it's taking about 5 mins to download anything. i'm a bit wary about changing the channel in case i lose connection on the laptop (which has happened before), then i really would be in a mess!

if i can get online properly, i'll have a look at 'hijackthis'.

i've transferred our wages software from the PC to the laptop, was worried it would be a problem as we're half way thru the year, but it's running & up to date ok now transferred, phew!

i've also transferred all other work documents to the laptop, backed up on a memory stick 1st. i can work like this, but it's a pain as i'll really need to move the laptop upstairs where all our paperwork is in the office when i need to do month end accounts.

flipping technology, great when it's working, nightmare when it's not! :o
  • ok, don't know if this is a fluke, hope not, but moving the antenna seems to have worked!

pages loading ok & doesn't seem to be losing connection. just done a couple of speed checks on broadbandspeedchecker -

    PC 1.13mbs d/l 0.321 u/l
    Laptop 1.16 d/l 0.336 u/l

around 1mb is what's expected for our line, we're not in a cabled area & are quite far from the exchange, so pretty stuffed on options unless i want to pay £20 per month for fibre. on the speedchecker map, someone pretty close to me was only getting 0.480mbs download, so i suppose i ought to consider myself lucky!

fingers crossed this is a stable connection sorted for the PC, thanks for all your help :D

Tbh I would go for a wired connection over wireless - more reliable, more secure, especially if you're using it for business.

For the sake of a fiver what have you got to lose. Fitting a pci card is a doddle - drop it in a spare slot and screw up the bracket.
