    +1 for Gmail
  • I have been trying for the past hour to edit my categories which has changed completely since the 'improvements'. Has anyone worked out how to do this. The only thing that is happening is that I keep getting logged out. Don't tell me that I have to start each category again and delete the original. Why can't they leave things alone - if it aint................:j:EasterBun:angry:

One thing to consider with web based email, such as gmail, is that not only can you access your email account from any web connected device with a browser, so can anybody else who has your account login details.

Yes true but if you opted for 2-step verification it adds an extra layer of security to your Google Account

In addition to your username and password, you'll enter a code that Google will send you via text or voice message upon signing in free of call charges.

So 2-step verification drastically reduces the chances of having the personal information in your Google account stolen by someone else. Why? Because hackers would have to not only get your password and your username, they'd have to get a hold of your phone.

    +1 Mozilla Thunderbird.

I have an ISP email address and a gmail account and use Thunderbird as an email client to download from both.

Spam is not a problem as Thunderbird allows you to create a whitelist of all your email contacts so emails from any other source go straight into the Junk folder.

Simply add any legit/new addresses you want to retain from the Junk folder to your whitelist and next time they'll go straight to your inbox. If you're not sure whether an email in the Junk folder is Spam or not, disable the Message Preview Pane, check the Mesage Source and if it's ok add the email address to your whitelist.

Incidentally, just had an email via Hotmail from a contact in Argentina. But they didn't send it - looks like yet another hacked Hotmail account.

John1 mentions 2FA (2 factor authentication) where you get codes sent to your phone which you use together with your password. It is "something you have plus something you know" - if either part is missing, the account is secure. I could give you my password, and still be comfortable.

What John doesn't mention is that there are 2FA apps available for Android and I imagine other smartphones too, so you don't have to rely on SMS or calls, although you have those options as backup. It's really wasy to use.
