Thunderbird is a mail CLIENT - a program that runs on your computer to download and send emails, much like Outlook. It is not an email service provider. It is good, if you want a client-side email programme.

HOWEVER - you lose a lot of the benefit of something like GMail (labels, stars, priority inbox, etc) which runs in a web browser. I strongly suggest using an online web service (eg GMail) as you have the same experience, fully in sync, no matter where you access your email.

One thing to consider with web based email, such as gmail, is that not only can you access your email account from any web connected device with a browser, so can anbody else who has your account login details.
If you are concerned (or even paranoid?) about your privacy, then a client such as Thunderbird can download the emails and delete them from the server.
Does of course mean you can only read old messages on the computer they have been downloaded to, but the same applies to anyone else.

If you get lots of spam on any email account, then you can blame yourself and your friends.

It is those people who will insist on forwarding messages with other peoples email address in plain view.

It only needs one to get virus or malware, and then all the email address will be harvested.

Learn how to use BCC and how to remove addresses in the email you forward.

Another gmx fan here. Been with them for over 4 years. I especially like how you can have several (up to 10) email addresses on the same account and can create/delete them when you want

I like gmail too and it is known for it's good :spam: filtering.
As someone else said, Yahoo has done a good job for me over the years aswell.

I also use spamgourmet sometimes: it's handy for signing up to those sites where you don't want to receive more than a set number of emails from them ;) Wish I'd discovered it earlier!
  • Get your own domain then you can have a million email addresses, and keep them even if you change ISP. Easy to identify where spam is coming from and to block it. "Ordinary" Web mail can be swamped with spam once your address gets around.

For an email client I use the one built into Opera.
  • I like AquaMail on my Galaxy Note GTN7000.
I am increasingly looking to port all my email needs to non Ad led Services.
I am a long term user of Gmail but dislike the whole ad thing 'cos it's free.

Just reminded me of a couple of GMail top tips to share...

If your email address is abc123@gmail.com then all mail to...
a.b.c.1.2.3@GMail.com, abc.123@Gmail.com etc all come to your inbox, (the dots are ignored). Also abc123+mse@gmail.com, abc123+boots@gmail.com etc (anything after a '+') will come to your inbox. Between these two, you have infinite email addresses to hand out as required (in this case, you could use abc123+mse@gmail.com to sign up to this site, the boots one to sign up to Boots...)

Hotmail has been going downhill with the amount of tinkering they keep doing. The newest interface is horrible to work around, searching horrible - all horrible.

Gmail is worse for managing emails - keep having to click twice / three times on buttons to performs a single action, selecting emails, searching.

Yahoo (which used to be the worst of the lot), now seems to be best for web mail.

But taking everything into account, Hotmail with IMAP wins because you can create folders and wot not - not good on Linux where there is no client to download those folders.

Hotmail seems to be the easiest of the online emails to crack. Maybe it's just me.

I do like my Thunderbird. Although it is a bit chunky.
Thousands of emails on it now and all backed up with Mozilla Backup.

Outlook Express used to crash with any sort of large number of emails in your folders.

Never trusted Outlook. All that information in just one .pst folder. No thanks.

Windows Mail isn't bad though. Seems to have solved most of the drawbacks Outlook Express had.
  • Seems to be a strange blend of email clients and email providers etc being suggested.

For an all in one solution then Gmail is fine.

Personally use my own domains and therefore use email clients - being an Apple user most the time then my mail client tends to be Mail be it on the computer, the mobile or tablet but do have a windows environment with Outlook 2010 and as the domains are hosted on Exchange then also have web access via OWA
