Oil boiler....which brand is better?

I'm getting the quotes in now for my new boiler installation which will be an external boiler. Two brands are coming up, Worcester and Grant.

Which is the better bet?
LBM.....sometime in 2013 £27,056. 10 creditors
June 20.....£7,587.....3 creditors left 72% paid

£26,200 on interest only part of mortgage (July 16)...will chip away £17,103
£49,200 repayment mortgage ( July 16) £37,764

If it's any help, I bought a house with a new Grant recently installed. At the first service (carried out by an excellent plumber I'd used before) he was very impressed to find a Grant. He claimed they were 'the best' - not least because parts were easy to get when needed.

Five or so years later I have had absolutely no complaints. No parts either - touch wood!

We have an external Worcester, in the 3 years we've had ours we have had problems every year. First year the flow switch kept sticking, 2nd year the heat exchanger went (although this was due to limescale and they said they wouldn't replace again unless we fitted a water softener), now this year we had a big leak on a valve. These have all been fixed by Worcester as it came with a 5 year guarantee, and they are brilliant with CS, very fast at fixing, even over weekends, can't fault them for that. But it has put us off, just hoping that we can go a few years without faults.
  • Grant every time, been fitting them for years, the Worcesters are terrible to work on.

Worcester are offering good deals on extended warranty at the moment (sounds like they need them), but the consensus is that Grant are better.

Grants can have a five year warranty thrown in too, you just need to choose your installer wisely as only some are on grants scheme to offer it, maybe a phone call to grants with you postcode would be a good idea.

I've got a Grant outdoor combi, about 2.5 years old and for once I took out the extended warranty which I'm glad I did.

Within the first year (it came with 2 year guarantee) I had the red expansion tank replaced.

2years and 3 months from new the flow valve starting leaking bad (spraying mains pressure water all over the insides of the boiler) and at the same time the engineer replaced that he tested the system and the expansion tank was leaking again (only been replaced a year before)

Grant would not accept that the already replaced part should be replaced for free....luckily I had taken out their 'bluefin' extended warranty so I could claim the job back.

So while the construction and servicability of the Grant seems pretty good, I'm not overly impressed with the reliability so far and if I hadn't have had the extended warranty I'd have been taking Grant to the small claims court under the SOGA!
