DVDs not covered by Proof of Posting

I sent a DVD yesterday, and obtained a proof of posting.

The lady behind the counter told me that it "wasn't covered." I was a bit harried and having to go to work quickly, so didn't enquire further. But now I'm wondering about it.

It was a LoveFilm DVD. Sorry if this is OT - but I suspect this is the right place to find people who know the ins and outs of Proof of Posting claims.

Yes it is covered and PO lady was probably doing the same as my Crown Post office are taught- and was trying to upsell by frightening you.

The only point she may have been correct on was the determined value for a payout- a second hand DVD probably has very little value but then it wouldn't matter however it was sent. I don't use Lovefilm, but don;t they have some sort of arrangement with buyers about lost returns?

I have heard that if you have PoP and a DVD is lost, then LoveFilm will put in a claim based on the customer's PoP. And if there isn't a PoP, then the customer gets charged, with £20 being a figure I've read.

But I've rented over 500 disks from LoveFilm, and none have ever gone missing. That's 1000 journeys through the post office system without failure.

Yes, the upselling by scaring sounds very likely. She didn't mention a value.

I've reached the end of my LoveFilm tenure as my list is empty apart from one DVD they won't send, though very strange things are happening. (Too OT: see thread in "shop-but-don't-drop" forum if anyone wants to know).

BTW: When I was having a quick google, I found a number of threads describing problems when cancelling LoveFilm. If I remember correctly, one of them was by you, Soo-lin. (Though, my memory is like a sieve). I'm being extra careful about obtaining PoPs right now in case there is a mystery disk "not received". I'm tempted to send the last disks back by the proper method that actually gets you a signature. I"ll check the stickied postage thread for that when the time comes.

I did use a postal DVD service but it was many years ago, and yes I struggled to cancel them. I honestly don't remember if it was this lot or not- but it was probably 10 years ago now.

I had a bit of a rant about upselling and POs here

Funnily enough, my brother sent something special delivery on Monday and the PO "upsold" him first class recorded on top of the special delivery charge. They claimed that's the only way to guarantee next day. My brother - not being in the know - just paid it assuming it was right. It was only £1.50 extra but it irked me no end. The point of SD is that it is next day guaranteed.

I don't mind so much the upselling for, say speed of service (i.e. standard parcels may take longer) because there's actually some truth/benefit to it. But to outright lie or misinform customers in order to upsell is unforgivable.

Anyway, I posted a load of DVDs last week and obtained POP and wasn't told it doesn't count for DVDs. Assistant knew what they were because we chatted about them. These were just ebay sales though and most were very little value.

I suspect that I mis-remembered this post. I certainly read the thread, which has made me a bit more careful than I might otherwise have been.

I use Lovefilm, and there have been no problems. My card expired and I didn't realise it until I sent a couple of discs back and didn't receive the next ones - then I logged on and found out what was going on.

It's a useful service but I will take everything on board when I decide to cancel.

  • I hated lovefilm, I wanted to cancel but you have to phone them (despite it saying you can do it on their site). My card was about to expire and I didnt have any discs so thought I would just leave it, they then started sending me letters saying I owed them money and were gonna send debt collectors after me. I was a bit scared at the time so up dated my card details then phoned to cancel and was told I had been charged for another month so would have to wait to cancel.
Was more stress than it was worth.

  • I was warned by a colleague about how hard a job he had trying to cancel his love film membership, so managed to cancel without too much of a problem.

Before sending back your last film, make sure that you have cleared all items out of your wish list. They won't let you cancel until they've received the film, but if there's anything in your wish list, as soon as they get your film back, they'll send another out, making it almost impossible to cancel unless your wish list is empty.

Contrary to what I read when I signed up, there is no option to cancel on the web site, you have to ring them.

When you ring, be prepared for a very hard sell, trying to pursuade you to stay with them, maybe at a different package as you currently have. However, if you stay firm, they will eventually cancel.

    That makes no sense
So the item had 2 barcodes and your POP shows both of these?

I use Lovefilm and always just put them in the post box.

If they don't arrive you just notify them, who notify RM. No charges involved. In fact they don't even ask you to fill a claim form now like they used too.
